Buying a razor for replating

I love the look of rhodium in the morning!

I've decided to amass a small selection of razors to shave with - and get them replated purely because it looks nice.

So with this in mind, does the original condition play a part in how well the razor will take the replating process?

Assuming the razor has no cracks, large scratches or dents and functions correctly, can the finish be as rough as you like?

Or is there more to it than that?

There is a highly regarded UK based replated whose name escapes me (but somebody will be along with a better memory) who I'd PM and ask.

EDIT: here is his website and his B&B profile page is here.

Hi, yes, I've already been in touch with Dave, but have never had anything replated by him - yet.

At the moment he's looking at a Flare Tip where the TTO mechanism is stuffed.

Dave did a rhodium replate on my President, and it came out perfect. Dave is a perfectionist when it comes to prep work. I had some stubborn gunk on my razor when I sent it; I had spent hours trying to remove it. Dave got it off before he started the replate. He does first rate work.

When you shop for a razor, you want to make sure the razor is mechanically sound, doesn't have any dents or other imperfections. Brassing is ok, of course.

Thanks for the kind words Joglander :)

An in answer to the original question, the better the condition of the razor, the better the result after plating. Some light pitting to the silo doors or head top plate poses no issues but pitting to the handle or inside/underside of the head is almost impossible to remove and where engravings are located, these will obviously be worn by polishing out pitting.

Dirty looking razors with dull plating are great candidates, or even where brass is showing in places, although I have achieved results from 'basket cases' like this one:

(Those Eagle Eyes amongst you will notice the different base-plate in the Before And After but the handle and Head Top are those in the Before pic - the original Base-plate came out just as well, surprisingly)
