Butterscotch (?) for restore

Hi all,

Just won this off the bay. I think I paid a lot, but I really like the shape and I think it will go well with a grade A silvertip knot I ordered from the golden nib/

What do you guys think

here is what the seller says

Written on the handle towards the top is; "B A C 3 Best Badger Made in England Scotland"

and also;

"Made especially for Baitman & Co. New York".

Measures 4 1/4" tall. The bottom of the handle is 1 1/2" in diameter

I believe the handle is bakelite but I am not quite sure.

I think it will clean up nicely. try a tooth brush on it to get rid of the main junk. I have also found that nevrdull polish cuts through the gunk well. once you get it clean you will be able to see better what you are working with. If you happened to pay a bit for it though you might want to try your hand at a restore with something you like less first, at least taking the knot out anyway. One of my first was a tall Opal that I absolutely love, dremel slipped and took a gouge right out of the side about a pencil eraser deep destroying the brush. Just be very careful man. Too nice to screw up.

THanks mate, good advice.

Is it just me or does this look remarkably like the Simpsons Astor??

Ahh was watching that one.

Pretty sure it's an early Catalin based handle.

Just be careful with any abrasive pastes etc... If you cut it back too deep you'll most likely get rid of the ( oh so appealing ) butterscotchy colour !!!

Nice pickup Jase ! :001_smile

Cheers mate

thanks for the tip, I was going to use a fine polishing paste but maybe I need to rethink that?

Cheers

I never knew England was in Scotland… in addition to a lovely handle, this guy also gave you a geography lesson :001_tt2:

Was bidding on this one myself, but left when it went up to $56 - how much did it go for eventually?

It went for $61 Rudy, thanks for stopping your bid at 56 :thumbup1:, I set a max of $72 and was off line until after the end.

It is a beautiful brush. I notice it bears the marking, "Made Exclusively for B. Altman", a wonderful high end department store based in Manhattan from days long gone by. Enjoy!

Does anyone know anything about the B.A.C (manufacturer ?) on this handle?

Cheers

Actually..........remembering now......

This originally didn't have Australia as valid mailing option either. I sent an email re this and got :

"Shipping to Australia would not be a problem. First class international is $8.50. I revised the item so that you can bid."

Too rich for me, but at least it went to someone Down Under.

Jase, you owe me........... :001_tt2:

Thanks Fellas!

I am glad that the bids didn't go any higher - phew!

After seeing Figits butterscotch porn thread I really wanted one (see it's your fault mate :001_tongu) I had it one my watch list but was going to be away for the end of the auction - it was at around $51 with 2 hours to go. I bid $72, with the thought in mind that $100 including a grade A silvertip knot and shipping would be an okay final price for this nice looking brush,

I think I will be out of bidding on the bay for a while now, so I hope some similar handles come up for you fine gentlemen.

Hi Fellas

Well I got the brush, it is bigger than I thought :001_smile Opening is 24mm!

This seems to look like a simpson and the size 3 on it would relate to the knot size on my Tulip 3??

Interestingly it does seem to have the name Scotland on it but it is very very faint, The S in clear but it could be another name of similar characters - any ideas?? I still think it looks a lot like an Astor??

Anyway I removed the old know quite easily and with out drilling, but using a large pair of plyers and twisting the knot. I the used the tips of the plyers to pull the remaining hair out.

So the handle came out unscathed :thumbup1:

I gave it a scrub with toothpaste and then a light polish with some silver polish to shine it up a bit.

THe colour in person is stunning, it is a deep caramel butterscotch or burnt orange- This pic looks a little light on my monitor - but could view nicely on others? This pic looks a bit bland but the colour is very rich.

Unfortunately my 20mm Grade A silver tip knot I ordered TGN is too small, I will just have to order a bigger knot.

Cheers

Looks great! Be sure to post the after picture once this bad boy gets a knot!

with a hole diameter of 24mm and a knot of 20mm you could always drill it out deeper to have a knot set at a lower loft for more backbone. If you did this the 20mm could fill out the 24mm hole. Set it a a 45-47mm loft. would be a nice little brush imo.
