What's new

burning face

i was wondering if it was possible to have an adverse reaction to a cream without breaking out. i recently tried a new cream, and while it did have a nice lather and scent upon first lather i started to feel a little "tingle" which i tossed up to a cooling effect, but by my second lather my face felt like it was on fire and i had to stop there.
it kind of sucks because i was really wanting to try a new cream. i've been using the tobs jermyn and think i'll go back to using it for now, but am open to any suggestion on creams to try.

I have had a tingling and burning reaction to certain soaps and creams without breaking out. In some cases, by face did have addtional redness after shaving for anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours. In other cases, I didn't have any redness afterwards, just the burning while using it. There are too many other soaps and creams that don't cause this discomfort for me, so I just move on. I read once that you shouldn't put anything on your face if it causes a painful burning sensation, and that makes sense to me.

A standard test for sensitivity is to put a dab of the stuff on the skin on the inside of your elbow (where your forearm and upper arm join) and leave it there for 24 hours. If any inflammation or rash appears, well, that's a bad sign. :frown:

It doesn't sound as if you need to perform that test this time though. Tat2d Bald Dude encountered a similar reaction, only he went ahead with an entire shave and eventually had the skin on his face peel, like a sunburn.

which one?

it was no-name brand i found online. there wasn't a lable on it, so i should have known better, but from the description it sounded nice (lanonin, spearmint, rosemary, etc). at least when i told the owner of my reaction he gave a full refund.

This could be an allergic reaction, it could be a sensitivity, it could be the way this soap feels. Go with what 82R100 suggested, and see what happens.

I've had some minor reactions to some soaps and creams without ever breaking out. I think a breakout would be considered a moderate reaction, but certainly one need not have something that significant to nevertheless find a certain cream or soap is not for you. I discovered after several uses that Trumper lime shaving soap caused my skin to feel irritated during and after the shave - nothing so bad as skin peeling, or anything like that, but it was definitely unpleasant. I had a similar experience with C&E Sienna shaving cream years ago.

Perhaps it was an unlabeled tube of Ben Gay.

I have a similar reaction to 100% Glycerin; not burning but some heat. Turns out that Glycerin absorbs moisture from the atmosphere and if it's dry weather it takes it from your skin - that may be part of my experience as it was dry winter when this happened.

i'll have to say that if that had been my first de shave i might have had second thoughts about de shaving, but since i had already had a couple of weeks really good shaves i knew it had to be the cream.
