buffing with a straight

Hi all,

I'm a straight shaver but been toying with de shaving. Buffing with a de went along pretty likity split so I figure a straight would be no problem since I'm pretty handy.I was just getting in to it a my wife knocks on the door...Next thing I know I'm rinsing a chunk off my razor.:c3:

Blade buffing consists of short quick back and forth strokes with the razor without moving the razor off the face. Used to address a problem area.

I shave in the evening and I even take the phone off the hook while shaving anymore. Everyone knows that shave time is my time and I'm left alone.

Been there! I still have a scar on my neck, same scenario, wife startled me while I had a 1 micron blade against my neck. Oh well, you live and learn.

I see. Ouch!

Yeah, buffing with a straight isn't generally recommended. Short quick strokes work, but not really short strokes. Maybe 3" max.

Just...shave faster and next time you'll be done by the time she bothers you. OR you could lock the door?

Doesn't stop the startling grab for the handle when they expect it to be unlocked. :001_rolle

I buff too and it works great in the muzzle area. When I used a DE I used the Enchante oil when I buffed, but haven't used that with the straight. I do find the technique is a little different with a very light grip on the razor. It almost seems to be a skimming motion.

Thats the same what I do it, with a very light grip.

I buff with a scything motion on my chin. Not really that uncommon, Bart mentions that in his wiki tutorial as well.

The light switch for my bathroom is on the outside, and my daughter accidentally turned it off while I was doing just that. I almost had a heart attack.

I use a buffing stroke unless I am in a hurry. I don't ever remember cutting myself while buffing but with a long stroke I will knick myself on occaision.

As for locking the door... My wife always gives me the sly voice and says "Why is the door locked? Are you stropping your razor again?" Suggesting that I am doing something other than shaving.

Now that's just plain dangerous. You need to address this design flaw ASAP.

Are you?

I buff primarily to get lather back on a spot I just hit. But I don't think its as helpful as with a DE.

That's the main reason I buff as well, but it works well I find because once I've done one pass I'm almost BBS since I'm actually going over the same spot a few times really quickly. And like Tony Soprano above, I also like a little scything action with my buffing as well.
