What's new

Brushes and Ultraviolet.

I've got a few brushes now and some of them are quite dense and take more than a day or two to dry out thoroughly. I have been taking them out of the bathroom and placing them on a sunnier window sill sometimes they are there for quite a few days sometimes weeks if I don't fancy using them. So I know UV is good for sterilizing but in the long term could it do any lasting damage other than a bit of bleaching.

I prefer to keep mine in a dry place with air circulation, no sun reach them. As long as they are not enclosed and air reach them, they dry. I can't imagine UV doing any good to the hair.
In my youth, I spent a lot of time near the ocean and the sun in the tropics and have no hair left on my head.

I know it is a widely debated subject, BUT, I am a shaker. I shake the water out after I do my final rinsing and cleaning of the brush. I have a very short supply of brushes, and i do this same thing daily. To this date, more than six months of shaving and using a brush, I have not had one fail me. So I am in the shakers camp. My brushes take only a few hours to dry thoroughly, and I do it standing them. I am a non hanging shaker. There you have it. My two cents.

First I doubt the UV is getting that far into the dense hair and second the UV can damage the hair over time the same that it can damage your hair if you spend too much time in the sun.

UV damages plastics (handles) and probably isn't all that good for the bristles. As far as sterilizing goes, dry the brush out by shaking and then putting it on a brush stand. Mold and bacteria won't survive long without moisture. A rinse with borax solution will kill of most bugs pretty quickly as well.

I doubt that there is much penetration into teh brush to do any good. Also if it is indoors the window will filter some of the UV out. In addition the plastics will fade in color and looked washed out with time because of the sunlight.
