Brush Restore Tutorial?

With all the beautiful brush restoration going on in here, I'm starting to think about maybe doing a couple myself. Was wondering if there's a thread detailing how to go about doing it. I did a search and didn't see anything specific outside of a few usual questions. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't think there is a complete tutorial, as such, but there is a fair bit of info scattered amongst the threads, if you look hard for it. Perhaps you can make the first! Take lots of photos as you go.

I think your best bet would be to just start working on a brush and each time you get a bit stuck post a question and let us all chime in with an answer. I just finished my first restore last night but I sadly didn't document and photograph the process as I went. Might take a finished shot and post it tonight, though.

I see people talking about brush restores. What about getting a brush handle brand new and the knot from say, TGN and putting it together yourself for a truly custom brush? Is there a place online where you can purchase brish handles? Or do you generally look on online auctions, etc for old vintage brushes?

Several members do custom handles. Rudy Vey, Bullseye, more. There are also at least a couple shops online that sell them. I don't recall them offhand, but one that immediately comes to mind is some place in Vietnam that specializes in Water Buffalo Horn.

Vintage brushes are cheaper, so long as you don't want a butterscotch one but then you aren't getting something custom, often won't know what knot to buy until the brush arrives, and have to go through the work of cleaning the brush and removing the old knot. Also, pictures of brushes often conceal damage you probably won't want to deal with.
