Brush problems with Musgo Real

Not sure if this goes on the brush or cream forum. I have heard that Musgo Real cream can cause the brush to have problems absorbing water. I really like the way the Musgo feels, but don't want to bugger up any of my $200 brushes! Will using Musgo Real cream possibly harm my brushes?

It had absolutely no effect on my brushes. They still work just fine.

Musgo is a great cream and I can only imagine that it would cause problems if your brush wasn't rinsed properly after use. I have never had a problem with it.

Not my experience. After I rinse the brush, it looks the same after using Musgo as it does any soap or cream.

  1. The brush' capacity to absorb water is not because of the hairs absorbing any (although they will do so to some extent, of course, hair is hair), but because the capillary action of so many hairs together holds the water in place.
  2. Musgo Real has a tendency to leave a very thin waxy residue (= the lanolin) on the brush if you don't clean the brush thoroughly. You will feel this as the hairs becoming a bit softer, and dark handles becoming a bit lighter.
  3. But that layer does not noticably affect the water absorbing capacity of the brush; and
  4. if you rinse and clean your brush after shaving you truly have nothing to worry about.

Just rinse your brush thoroughly afterwards and you'll be fine. That's what I always do with any soap cream, and I've not noticed any difference.

+1 on the effect of the lanolin.
I noticed that too.

Not a problem though.
It did not affect the performance or the workings with other products.

If the brush does become clogged up just soak it in a hot water and vinegar or borax solution for 10 minutes or so occasionally.

That will remove any soap or lanolin residues.

Go the Musgo!! :001_cool:

I think one blogger one time said one thing about lanolin creams gumming up brushes and it stuck. I've personally never noticed it with Musgo or Godrej or anything else, but I'm not one to a) use creams all that often any more, or b) use a single soap or cream for any contiguous length of time anymore. Perhaps if you used Musgo for a solid month with one brush, you might notice a performance impact. Of course, this is heavily meliorated by good care practices.
