Brush handle opening clearance?

Hello all, I'm currently attempting my first restore and have a quick question that I hope you can help me with. I'm currently re-knotting an old Culmak brush with a TGN 18mm best badger knot. I've removed the old knot and cleaned up the cavity. I think I intend on setting the knot at about 45mm.

How snug should the fit be between the bristles and handle opening? Should it be a tight fit or should there be a bit of clearance?

Thanks for any advice.

When i set two 20mm knots into two ever ready's, the openings were actually closer to 21mm (maybe slightly more). Mine are set at a loft of about 46 or 47mm if I recall correctly.

That being said, the hair in the knot filled the opening up because the knot is wider 12mm above the bottom of the knot (which is where to opening meets the knot). The lower i tried to set the finest knot, the tighter the fit, because the knot gets wider as you go up.

It will vary depending on your handle, opening, loft, etc.

The plug should probably have one or two mm clearance and the bristles should be right up against the lip with no gap.
