Brush Expert Advice Needed...

Hello fellow badgers,

I am planning my first purchase of a really fine silvertip badger brush. Oh joy! I previously had an ebay custom best badger job that I now realize is just too scritchy-scratchy on my face. For hard soaps, I already have a Semogue Owners Club boar brush, which I just, love, love, love (what a gem!!!).

So, I'm looking for a silvertip that will be used for creams and face lathering. I'm looking for a combo of style and soft, soft, soft bristles so my unfortunately sensitive skin does not experience irritation.

I have read on these forums that Kent, Muehle and Shavemac are among the softest. However, I am in love with some of the newest models of Omega silver tips, e.g., the Omega Finest SilverTip #6534.15 . They look like works of art!!!!

I want to spend a maximum of $125. So, am I needlessly fretting here? i.e., no matter what brand I get, will I be satisfied and can do no wrong? Is this a silly luxury dilemna? It is $125 though....what are your sagacious recommendations? : )

I have read that the Omega brushes are a touch floppy for some here. But they do have a reputation for being very soft.

Shavemacs can be custom made to suite your tastes if you wanted a handle with some personality. I have a couple and really like mine.

Shavemac Silvertip, really soft, but still good for face lathering. You want not too soft hair, just soft tips. A TGN knot either a Silvertip Grade A or the new Super Silvertip would be also a good choice.

Are there any US vendors where you can order a custom Shavemac?

Sounds like a Simpson Two-Band Super. Would take a little while to break-in but after that tips are very supple.

I'm really doubting my two-band Tulip is going to get as soft as my three-band silvertips. If you're looking for out-of-the-box softness, I would go with something else.

Agreed.

Based Two-Band suggestion off of;

And

You want not too soft hair, just soft tips.

I too have very sensitive skin and find that my T1 2B strikes a nice balance for face lathering. Super 2B is obviously not a silvertip but thought I'd just toss it out as an alternative.

For an out of the box soft silvertip in that price range, I would recommend a Savile Row brush from QED. I have the 3824 and love it, but would recommend a brush with a smaller knot for face lathering.

Also an EJ medium. Just sayin'. :biggrin1: I love it for face-lathering. Just enough bloom to be really luxurious, but not too much to get lather up your nose. EJ, Muehle, Shavemac, Rooney: those are the silvertips I've tried, and any one of them I think would serve the OP just fine.

+1
A 20mm or 22mm Saville Row is very soft and still has good backbone. Great all around brushes.

Are there any US vendors where you can order a custom Shavemac?

I think you can get a plain white Shavemac from a US vendor or two, but if you wanted something custom (handle style/color/materail and a custom knot size/loft/grade) then you have to email them at their web page.

I've found that rooney silvertip's are very very soft out of the box. In your price range also.

The simpsons three bands are soft also. Of three band brushes I prefer Rooney.
