Greetings from Mendel!

As many of you know, I'm a college instructor. If you will, please take a look at the following three briefcases (made by Roots) and cast your vote as to which one looks most professorial:

Also, if any of you own leather stuff from Roots, how have they held up? BTW, I am also considering Saddleback as well.

Of the three bags you posted, I would go with #3. Having said that, I voted for Saddleback. I know too many others that wanted a Saddlback, went with something else, and then had buyer's remorse that they didn't get the Saddleback. Now they have two leather bags (This rule doesn't apply to Mitchell Leather customers)...

I went with option #4. I went that route and couldn't be happier. The real question is whether you go with the original briefcase or the thin. The thin is more in line with what you posted, but the original is more flexible if you overstuff.

I would go with a Mitchell's Briefcase. But to answer your specific question, I picked #2

How about the large Saddleback satchel? I'm not a tall guy 5'5"

Of the three, I was torn between the first two.

Saddleback is very nice. I don't know how the pricing differs with Roots. Check the measurements to make sure the item is big enough to hold your stuff. Look at the thin briefcase, too.

I've got the large Thin SB and am glad I went with it over the Classic BC. It's big enough to carry all my stuff as a frequent traveller, but not too big where it just accummulates stuff. Any larger, and I would just keep throwing stuff into it.

As a university level teacher as well, I have two briefcases similar to No. 2 (there's something about it's clean lines which really appeals and I always remove the shoulder straps anyway).

Out of curiosity: Does the carrying capacity of nos. 1-3 differ in any significant way?

The carrying capacity is similar among all three. Say, what do you teach?

I think that they all look professional - and suitably "academic" being in brown rather than black. I would vote for #1 simple because the snap fastners are easier to deal with than 2 buckles. Personally, I have used brown leather Tumis for many years and have had no problems with them.

I voted #1, as it looked most college professor like, and it had the advantage of being quick to open and close. #2 had the most professional look IMO. IIRC some of the Saddleback cases looked similar to #2 and not a bad choice either. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them, including #3. But don't listen to me, as my tastes may not agree with yours.
