"Break- in period" on a blade

I typically use a blade 5-6 times before tossing it. I'm fairly new to DE shave (about 7 months now) and I've tried several blades (Derby, Astra SP, Feather, etc.). It seems like every blade I use has a break-in period of about 2 shaves. The blade performs better on shaves 3, 4, 5 typically. I use the same prep method every time. Anyone else experience this? BTW I've settled on Astra SP because they seemed to give me the most consistent comfortable shave, but still have the "break-in period".

Some people think blades are smoother after a shave or two. Some even go so far as to cork them.

I have noticed on an occasion or two, the 2nd shave being better than the 1st. But now I hand stop my blade before the 1st use, and between shaves, and I find no break-in necessary.

I have used the cork method, but not noticed a whole lot of difference. What do you mean "hand stop"?

I notice a slight difference in smoothness as the number of shaves progresses. Nothing that I worry about.

Thanks for the information and video. This is helpful. Its not that the first shave is extremely uncomfortable, but noticeably different. Since I've switched from cartridge/disposables, I've found myself paying a lot more attention to shave details

Your face smooths out the micro-burrs and abrasions on the blade during the first use. If it's a high quality blade, your face doesn't suffer from this. Corking or hand-stropping removes said burrs and abrasions before the blade meets your face. YMMV if you consider this a necessity or quackery :tongue_sm
