Bonnie & Clyde -the remake

I was watching Book TV on c-span2 and author Jeff Guinn was discussing his book "Go Down Together: The True, Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde". It was an interesting discussion including anecdotes about the that time and about the making of the movie in the 60's. He then happens to mention, with what I detected was a roll of the eyes, that a "Bonnie and Clyde" remake is in the works.

And who have they chosen for the female lead? non other than that accomplished thespian of the 20 something generation and former teen queen... Hilary Duff.

What's next, a remake of The Godfather starring Zach Efron as Michael?

Oh, and get this: It has a surprise ending!

I hear ya...but, you know every generation rolls its eyes as some pop-tart or young stud stars in a remake of a beloved film.

Fans of the original won't see the remake and fans of Hillary Duff, and whoever her male co-star is, haven't seen or heard of the original. Heck they probably haven't even heard of Faye Dunaway or Warren Beatty. So, no one is really offended, Ms.Duff gets a vehicle, the studio makes a film with no need to take a chance, etc, etc, etc.

The fact is that actors like Ms.Duff would rarely get a part if the studios weren't remaking films, or producing other crap. Kate Winslet or Rachel Weisz or Charlize Theron would get every part.

I just threw up in my mouth!

Don't know much about Ms Duff but atleast she would be around the right age to play Bonnie.

Not that that would be so bad, but why is it that HBO can find fantastic actors for its series while Hollywood cannot? Every actor in Band of Brothers, The Wire, True Blood, Deadwood, and the rest should inspire most Hollywood "faces" to find another line of work, but we keep getting garbage on our movie screens.

As Charlie Brown would have said, "Sigh."

Hey guys, I'm with you all the way. Well almost. Now lets establish straight away that I am a curmudgeon. I know you are all sitting there saying; "No, I don't believe it". Yet it is true.:rolleyes::redface::redface: I usually despise the remakes but found that usually it was because the producers seemed to think they needed a "contemporary twist" to the story. This one does not lend itself in any way to such treatment. It is a period accurate gangster story. No PC crap please. Now the only reason I say almost is that I looked at Charlize Theron the same way till I saw Monster. She was the typical cutie pie, blond fluff till then. I think if she is directed correctly Ms Duff could surprise us. Mind you I hold no real hope but there is a glimmer. BTW, agree with the list of actresses but would include Kate Blanchet, Emily Mortimer, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Regards, Todd

I think you can be a 'Movie Star' without being a particularly good actor, provided you find what you are good at and don't ever stray outside that, know your limits! I'll suggest that John Wayne is an example of this. I love The Searchers, Liberty Valance and many others, he was superb in them, but could you see him taking on the variety of roles that Jimmy Stewart was capable of?

Clint Eastwood is in my opinion an excellent movie actor and a talented man, but he knows what he is good at and sticks at it. For example he has never felt the urge to go on stage as Macbeth or King Lear. But Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen easily make the transition between big budget popcorn blockbusters, intelligent drama on screen and the West-end stage.

Similarly some excellent actors just did not have the 'look' to be a huge movie star, but prosper on TV and stage. I'll suggest James Gandolfini, Ken Stott.

Here here. Amazing comment.

On the Bonnie and Clyde remake, I can't say anything about it for sure. All this Hilary Duff talk could just be rumors. However, I like to keep positive. Frankly I'd love to be surpised by her doing an amazing job. Sometimes odd choices work.
