Bob Hope was a Gem shaver! -1937

Great ad!

A little searching around found some ads with Mr. Hope lending his name and image to ads for Personna DE and injector blades as well as Remington electric razors.

I also found a list of items that were to be included in his suitcase for a late 60's USO tour. Of interest to the B&B crowd are an unfortunately unnamed razor, "Gillette Shaving Cream" (Foamy, I'm guessing) and Brut 33...

My wife ordered this for me for Valentine's Day.

When I first started using a brush she said it reminded her of an old movie (we love old movies...partly how we met and fell in love - see PIF thread about the Dragon Gillette of interested for the story).

At first she thought it was Cary Grant on North by Northwest but after watching it again she said it wasn't (bummer, I mean, it's Cary Grant!)

But she finally figured it was Bob Hope. Not as handsome as Cary Grant but one of her favorite actors.

So I had been talking about how I like the old shaving advertising so she ordered this.

AND she said, "so I assume you'll have to buy one of this model now".

Ok, I think I can do that.

Anyone know anything about GEMs they can share .. especially 1937 models?

They are a SE right?

Very cool! Congrats.

And yeah; they are easily found on the bid site. And everywhere else there are anty-ques.

I looks like an GEM Micromatic Open Comb

Right, that's the only razor Gem was selling in 1937. Gem Micromatic open comb razors are very, very easy to find - I just bought one in its box for $5 plus shipping. Chrome or gold plate, your choice. Hold out for a nice one, lots of them have beat-up plating.

The U.S. Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio has an exhibit of Bob Hope. Including his comic "survival vest". Actually, not so comic if I ever found myself behind enemy lines...
