What's new

Boar convert.

I have been using two Tweezerman Badger brushes the past two years. Great soft brushes that whip up a lather pretty good. I had a cheapo VDH boar brush (still do) that I have used but was never impressed.

Wed I got in a lot of stuff I bought on Ebay, and in it was a decent condition no-name boar brush that felt pretty soft, yet still had a backbone. So, I soaked in dish detergent, built a lather, let dry while at work, and tried it yesterday on KMF cream, I like it, and liked that it had more backbone when lathering my face.

I used it again today, but went with my VDH deluxe soap that I've been having some lathering issues with. WOW Boar is 100% the way to go with soaps! I'll still use my badgers on cream, but this cheap boar brush just eats up the soap and face lathering was splendid!

I think I am going to order a Semogue 1470 to try. Its not much money, and I found an ebay seller with the brush and a stick of Palmolive shave soap for $17 shipped (have wanted to try palmolive shave stick as well). See how that compares after it breaks in, at least Boar brushes are affordable! :)

I prefer the natural boar color myself.

And here goes the BAD...

Welcome to the club.
I have been reading this site for a while and it has been interesting to observe the rise in prominence of the boar brush. While the relative inexpensive nature of the boar brush at first makes you think you are going to save money what actually happens is that you end up buying two or three or four. One a week or a month. It's fun to get them, it's fun to break them in and each one will have a slightly different personality.

Fair warning, be prepared for it.

After some good usage, and the hairs of boar brushes start to split and fan out, looking kinda weird, THATS when they get good!

I thought I was only going to use Badger brushes until I used (and broke in) a Semogue 1305. What a great surprise that was, especially for the cost.

I'm a boar convert, too. I love my SOC boar, and I'm a fan of the B&B Essential boar (except that I find the handle a bit small.)

My current favorite brush is the best of both worlds: the SOC 2012 Special Edition, which is a mix of boar and badger.

My most expensive brush, a T&H silvertip badger, must be getting awfully lonely. I haven't used it since I discovered the boars.

I don't think that I'll ever buy another badger brush after experiencing the SOC. I used to think that boar brushes were inferior, until I actually tried one. The nicest brush that I now own is a boar, and it was a fraction of the price of a high end badger brush. Now it just seems silly to spend so much money on a badger brush and have to worry about taking perfect care of it.

Omegas, Semogues, Old EverReadys, etc. All great brushes, agreed that it would be nice for the manufacturers to just leave the bristle natural without tint.

The artificial badger band that they dye on the bristles of some brushes is quite annoying. My 1305 bristles like to snap off at the point where it's dyed on... not sure if this is a coincidence or not.

I quite love the look of the SOC with its undyed bristles and plain wooden handle. Such a beautiful brush. My other favorite is the Italian Barber version of the 1305, with the red/white/green handle and natural bristles.

I agree. I cannot abide a fake badger brush. The 610 and SOC are for me! The B&B Essential Boar is another winner.

I love my boar brushes. Just not as much as my badger brushes. I still use the boars on occasion just for the variety. Boars are far more cost effective than badgers without a doubt.

Boars rock. I sold my badgers, but still am curious about TGN and Whipped Dog
TGN Finest---rocks and I also use boar. The next up will just have to be a Vie-Long, but I'm diggin' my Semogue 1305 and Omega 10098 Pro.No soap stands a chance of failure to lather.

I never liked boars when I first started shaving as I thought they tore my face off. I was then PIFed a semogue that was already broken in and WOW different brush. I now have 3 different boars including a B&B and I love busting one out and having a little exfoliation every now and then.

I have a three brush rotation, Omega 31064, Semogue 610, and M&F 1/2. Although the M&F looks great, solid handle, nice bulbed shape, etc, I simply find it easier to get a good lather on my face with the boar brushes. And I've had the M&F for almost one year, so it is broken in. Also prefer the solid blond boar without the fake badger stripe. I'll probably try one more badger down the road to see if its better.
