Blades?

Any of you Method Shavers use any blades other than Feathers or Derbys? I'd really like to find something in between the two..

astra. Feather's are too sharp I believe. They're great for the third shave.

On weekends I use Israeli red pack..... more gentle on the skin

Feathers are recommended in Method shaving. However skill levels vary widely among DE users and so less sharp blades may be used. Feathers should be used by advanced DE shavers.

I'm not a method shaver, but FWIW, the Personna Red Pack blades were a nice middle ground blade between Derbys and Feathers for me. They're now my blade of choice.

I think Feathers are fine...just not worth the premium. I look for comfort when evaluating blades....the RP's/Wilkinson just seem to glide smooth. The Derbys and Crystals seemed a mite harsh, unless I corked them.
The one thing I haven't found is a blade that maintains its edge....most seem to last 4-6 shaves. As time goes by, I find myself changing blades more frequently. They're cheap enough that it seems pointless to try squeezing out additional shaves from a blade that's becoming dull.

I wasted a lot of time and pain testing blades. Instead of stopping after discovering a comfortable shave, I kept at it. Looking back, it would have been better to stay with a winner.

Hey Mike....do you write Shaving101? Its a great source (been digging the Tabula Rasa). Now, if I could get onto the Hydrolast forum....still waiting on approval.

Feathers kill me. I will cork it next time and see if that helps. If not they're outta here.

Sharks were okay.

Bluebirds...that is MY blade Until now each blade was about the same. The Bluebirds, I love them. Anyone find a good price on 50 let me know.

I stashed my Feathers for when I become proficient. In an earlier post, I mentioned using an M3, which I now know was a mistake. I ended up with irritation like never before. I had to let it heal, then go back to a DE and sticking with the forms.

I've used everything from Merkur to all the various blades in the DE sampler pack from West Coast Shaving. I used the Feathers for quite awhile with good results, then Charles gave me a pack of Sharps to sample. They're great for me and I've made the switch to Sharps full-time with a 100 pack of them.

OK, I'm no Method shaver (yet?:innocent:) but I'm rather surprised nobody here mentioned the Yellow Gillette 7O'Clock yet. They are great blades whatsoever, and if you're looking for some kind of "best of both worlds" compromise, then you're in for a treat.

I've read someone mentioned the Red IPs: they're on the smooth side and not mighty sharp, just a tad above the Derbys, very nice blades, but not worth moving from there.

Now, another sharp option, which wouldn't be so rough and last much MUCH longer compared to Feathers could be the Gillette Bleue Extra.

Both the Yellow and Bleue Gillettes are made in the St Petersburg Plant.

So it goes:
[Comfort/Smoothness]:Derby--Red IPs---*|*-----G.7O'Yellow---G.Bleue Extra---Feather[Sharpness]
*|* here is the middle of the road:wink:

Hope this helps,

I opened a little pack of the 7:00 blades and have tried one. It seemed OK, but not outstanding. Lots of variable opinions on blades!

:jump:
I often use Derbys, as I have nearly 200 of them, and they work well for me. I just tried my first Blue Bird, and WOW!!! It is terrific! Four days, and still wonderfully smooth! I also really love Crystals.

Those were my first blades and are horrible. If you look online you can find great deals on: Derby's(14 dollars for 100), Feathers(30 dollars for 100), Gillette Bleue Extra(20 dollars for 100), Gillette Super Silver(14 dollars for 100), and I have never seen great deal on Merkur blades. I have bought these deals recently.

Anyways, Feathers are recommended because they are the best blades on the market, they are the sharpest, longest lasting, and wear the most evenly. Otherwise if you use Derby's or other blades, that's fine with method shaving, but you do more work in your shave than using a feather.

I wish they still offered Gillette Platinums. Such great blades.

I use Feather blades, and I get 2 shaves out of them normally, 3 shaves MAX. Feathers are notorious for losing their edge quickly.

I've found that I get less shaves/blade using MS. That makes sense, since I tend to make more passes. Before, I usually changed blades every six shaves, now I get 4-5.
