Blades for a Gem Micromatic

Do singe edge razors require a completely different sort of blade than the standard DE? Or are you able to just cut them in half and use them in an SE razor?

For the Micromatic you'll need different blades.

Like any of these. (except the Injector blades, doh!)

The razors that use the snapped in half DE blades are usually shavettes or some such... like

You will need to buy single edge blades. They look like the standard razor blades you buy at the hardware store, BUT DO NOT BUY THOSE! You can find them in many drug stores/grocery stores under the brand names Pal, Treet, or Gem. Also you can go to:http://www.tedpella.com/dissect_html/dissect.htm and order blades from there. We just had a group buy on these SE blades, I'm looking forward to getting mine, I'll let you know what I think of them. I have a micromatic and I use the generic store brand single edge blades made by American Safety Razor, you can find them in a lot of stores as generic store brands. I actually enjoy the shave my SE gives me better than most DE. Let me know if you have any more questions.

You can't use DE blades, broken or not, and you shouldn't use just any old SE. Use shave-specific GEM blades. Preferably the teflon-coated ones supplied by Ted Pella.

According to Micromatic's patent application (1,773,614, from 1929), the Micromatics (at least the OC) should be able to use double-edge as well as single-edge blades!! Just found this out today, can't wait to try it...here's the relevant bit:

"..I have illustrated a double-edged blade which may be employed with my present device, my invention permitting the selective employment of either a single-edged blade ... or a double-edged blade ... without in any way requiring changes or adjustments of any kind."

Whoa.

view post #7 here , the Micromatic DE blade in question looked just like a Gem blade but with no spine. Where the spine should be is the second edge.

I actually have one of the Micromatic DE blades, which I keep as a curiosity; I'll never shave with it. The photo below should be clear enough to show the differences between it and a standard DE. The suggestions already made concerning blades are good; I like both the Gems and the Treets. Just to be clear, these are a great starter blade, and you can look for bargains on bulk buys if you take to SE shaving.

It doesn't work AT ALL!! If you try to use a DE blade, you are going to rip your face badly up. DON'T DO IT!!

As mentioned above the Gem Double Edge blade was a special blade for usage only in the Gem Micromatic series, and doesn't resemble a standard double edge blade at all.
