This may well be a stupid question but does anyone know what the numbers are on some blades i.e. 1 to 4 on the corners??

It has something to do with the manufacturing process. Nothing really to concern yourself with.
This question comes up so many times, it should be required reading before joining the board!
Some blades have hash marks at the corners instead of numbers, one mark for one edge, two marks for the other.
A fat-handled tech that I bought on eBay came loaded with a 1949 Gillette Blue Blade that had these hash marks, again likely an indexing feature for the manufacturing process.
