What's new

Black and Red New dilemma

I purchased a Back and Red Gillette New set a month or so ago on B/S/T. It was nicer than I expected and I have been hesitant to shave with it. I finally decided to put an Iridium in it and use it until the blade was done, then leave it in the box as more of a display piece. What I didn't expect was for it to shave better than any other razor that I have. I have had an irritation free BBS shave consistently with this razor. I am afraid that with regular use, the gold plating will wear off. Should I stick with using this razor or look for a user-grade version? Is there something similar without the gold plating that I should be looking for?

Sucked in by the NEW! It's an excellent shaver and I can see why you'd have this exact experience with it. I say shave with it until a good opportunity for an inexpensive shaver-grade one comes along. I have a few NEWs and I never spent a whole lot of money on any of them. I think you'll be able to find one eventually. Putting some shaves on this one in the meantime won't kill it.

The British nickel plated version is rare and expensive in comparison.

I use my New everyday. They are fantastic razors. The plating looked almost new when I got it and will probably still look that way long after I am gone. I say use it.

I always thought mine was the best razor, money could buy. It has to be the long tooth, with out a doubt. Any one else agree? I am hesitant to use a new one too. but if you look at it this way: I have old ones that have zero finish on them. plain copper and brass. I clean and shine them after I use them and they still look great. When you are a very old man you could say, look at this I wore it out like this. then some silly kid could buy and shine it like I did long time ago.

Chris, that English NEW of yours is, in my opinion, the King of all NEW's with regard to shaving quality. I find it to be just a step ahead of the others in delivering a close and comfortable shave.

Regards,

My thoughts as well. Why not enjoy it. I never buy razors I don't intend to shave with.

I've got a few beater bar handle NEW razors. I keep toying with the idea of re-plating, but I sense a good home here. PM me and if the pictures don't scare you off, I'll send you one for the cost of postage.

You are a poet AND a prince!

Regards,

huh, I look forward to seeing how my razors wear down over time. I say use it, if you use it it becomes "yours." If that makes any sense.

I misread Topgumby's offer. My bad.

In May I bought a replated NEW head with a Bull Mastiff handle from cooncatbob. Extraordinary shaves with Astra Platinums. If anyone has doubts, find an old NEW and try it out with a blade that works for you.
