best all around whiskey for mixing?

hi gents , i was wondering if you could tell me whats a good all around mixing whiskey?(for manhattans , old fashions , whiskey and 7up/coke , etc). thanks for your help:thumbup:

I good friend sat me down at a bar one day and bought me shots of every whiskey they carried (they had a lot of them) to try and convenience me that his brand was the smoothest and tastiest. Well besides getting totally blotto I had to agree with his choice

I like Makers Mark either neat or with a little ice.

If I want to mix, I'd use Cutty Sark. Although technically that's a Whisky, rather than a Whiskey.

Evan Williams if I'm having friends over an making mixed drinks. Its pretty good stuff for the price...and I dont want them to sucking down all my top shelf stuff.

If I plan to mix (ginger ale, diet cola etc), I'll go for Evan Williams, Jim Beam or even Old Crow if I'm feeling cheap. I mean, why spend more money on it if you are just going to mix it with Coke? I've gotten to where I don't like sweet cola drinks though, so I just drink my Old Crow with water and bitters now :001_tongu

i just went through a phase if expensive whiskey $30.-$50. Found some good stuff in that price range. Now for fun I am looking
at whiskey under 20.00 and I am finding some nice stuff. Btw I won't give up on woodford.

You got good taste, turtle. Dickel #12 is my go-to whisky. #8 is quite good, as well, and given its lower price is probably a better choice for mixing in most drinks. In general, I'm not big on using pricey booze for mixing, if by mixing we mean mixed with sweet, overpowering mixers. Martini/Manhattan type drinks require quality hooch, of course. Ditto if we are talking about a splash of water or soda. I always shake my head when people order a screwdriver with Ketel 1 or Belvedere or something like that. (With that said, if you are going to be having several drinks, it behooves you to use a product that is well filtered and won't make you feel too terrible the next day. But there are many brands that can be had for a reasonable price.)

IMO, Makers Mark is better than anything coming from Jack Daniels these days. Jack's Black Label was a decent whiskey a looong time ago. It's now some of the worst brand-name whiskey available, IMO. It is now being made for mooks who get drunk mixing it with coke. Gentleman Jack is better, but still nothing to write home about, again IMO.

I tend to prefer whiskey on the rocks (and for that I have a pretty well loaded top shelf), but if I do happen to be mixing, Makers usually gets the nod.

I don't drink bourbon and Coke any more, but when I did, Early Times was my whiskey of choice, followed by Jim Beam. I see no reason to spend more for a bourbon that is being mixed with cola. Seagram's 7 is another pretty good choice, mixed with lemon-lime soda.
