beginner recommendations

Can anyone recommend me a good beginners pipe? Ive been told to look for a corn cob due to them being cheap to start out and easy to get rid of if I don't stick with it. Any other recommendations for a newbie like me? Thanks guys.

A falcon metal pipe. $10 dollars on ebay and they are very forgiving for someone new to pipes. They are what eventually turned me into a pipe smoker.

It's pretty much a personal thing. A cob is definitely a good option, but unless you are ordering online you probably have limited options. I live a short distance from David's in Des Moines, which is a nice shop, but they only have one or two styles of cobs available. A straight one and one with just a bit of bend in the stem. They also have mini-cobs, but let's not go there.

Another option is to go to your local pipe shop and see if they have some low end pipes, often called basket pipes because that's how they are displayed, or other low end pipe. The low end briar pipes used to be $10-$15 when I started this a decade ago, but anymore I am doing good to find a pipe in the $25-$40 range. These aren't quite the throwaway items that cobs are, but could serve you well. I've been smoking some of my basket pipes for 10-15 years.

I like to see and handle my pipes before buying them, so online shopping is out of the question for me. Besides, I've seen a lot of cheap, nasty pipes on the major e-commerce sites that a newbie might not be able to pick out.

If you are sure you want to start smoking a pipe, you may be ahead to find one that trips your trigger and buy it regardless of price. Smoking a pipe you truly love may keep you in the game when you might easily walk away from a cob or basket pipe with little personality to it.

Consider how you will be smoking. Will you be smoking during a long evening in your recliner or grabbing a quick smoke on the go? Do you need something for a quick bowl during an office smoke break, or to relax with during a day of fishing? Such questions actually make a difference in what style of pipe you choose.

I will mainly be smoking in the evenings while sitting on my balcony outside to relax, thanks for the suggestions.

Cobs aren't a bad way to start if you're just exploring. Like you mentioned they are relatively easy to come by, and only cost a few dollars. Some people think they are hokey, but it boils down to what you want to spend.

With pipes, proper technique is going to to make a bigger difference than the cost, or quality of the pipe you buy.

I've been at it for a year and I smoke a cob more often then anything else. Otherwise I suggest a Savinelli, Peterson, or Viking. I own a viking and it smokes like a dream. Savs are very nice too though I no longer own one.

well, I ended up going into my local Tobacco Merchant store today and picked up a basket pipe and tamper for $30, not too bad. Now to get home and give it a smoke. Thanks for all the help guys.
