What's new

Been out of touch with the cologne game for a while...need new scent suggestions!

It has been several years since I really set out to find a "signature" cologne for me to wear. Back when I was in my late teens and early twenties, I gravitated toward cleaner, sportier, "aquatic" scents (Aqua di Gio, Polo Sport, etc.). Those were perfect for my lifestyle back then, as a young single man on the prowl and on the cusp of adulthood. But now that I am older, have a family and a career...I need something a little more serious. I have always loved bold, mossy/woodsy colognes like Polo. In that same vein, what are some serious, classy, bold and masculine colognes that I should try?

Scent suggestion threads are always difficult without any reference to price. That said, there are a number of good scents that will fit in that category. One that I definitely think is worth checking out is XPec. It's got the mossy/barbershop feel but with sophistication and class. If you prefer bold, then Mazzolari Mazzolari (kind of an 80s power scent on steroids with a more grown up feel) or Mazzolari Lui are two that shoud definitely be experienced. Another great bold scent, more spicy than woodsy, would be Mecca Balsam by www.profumo.it. Finally, if you like musky scens, Serge Lutens' Musc Kublai Khan is not to be missed...

Of course, you can always also go with your standby of Polo.

Ysl's Rive Gauche is fantastic, if your looking for a masculine, mature scent. Doesn't last long on me, but it's one of my fav's.

basenotes.com is a good site for reviews of just about every scent out there. In addition to the ones that are readily available in department stores, you might consider sampling:

Penhaligons English Fern and Sartorial
Knize 10
Creed Bois du Portugal

Bottom line - buy samples first - blind buys are often expensive mistakes since decent quality juice is not cheap.
