I recently got my first shaving brush ever! It is a semogue silvertip 2015 HD and I read threads about badger "funk" and how to get rid of it. When I received the brush I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoyed the scent of my brush.
Anyone else like the smell of their badger?
My Semogue Owners Club boar came with a nice cologne smell. I assume a Semogue badger would smell just as nice. However most every other brush I have came with a nasty dirty animal smell to it. If your into that sort of thing more power too you
It is very pleasant...until it gets wet! I have used 20 Mule Team Borax to condition boar brushes over the years with good results. Mild shampoo works as well. Some of the vendors sell a brush cleaner as well. I usually follow the above with a long swirl with a strong scented shaving product and let it soak in for a while.
Semogue for some reason was different than my other badgers... The scent is... funky... Not a fan no, I rather smell my brush after a shave... Right now, it smells like Proraso!
New badgers smell like creosote to me, so no. I give them a couple of shampoos, then a couple of test lathers with a strongly scented cream like Proraso. Works like a charm to defunk the brush.
Enjoy it while it lasts, any shaving equipment is going to smell like your cream/soap in no time even if you rinse it thoroughly after each shave, at least the brush.
Make sure you get a cream or soap with a scent you like and this won't feel like a problem at all.
And enjoy your first badger brush, I got mine a few weeks ago and remember how floored I was at how nice and luxurious it felt. At least compared to the cheap generic brush I had before.
Products made from natural materials like animal hair can vary widely, even in the same brand. Be glad you didn't get a stinker- a funky brush can almost knock you off your feet the first time you put it under your nose.
