AWHH, Man...Look......Restore fail.

$002.jpg
One of my favorite restores, I use this brush all the time. Started to load the brush this morning after a soak, and discovered this horrible crack. Shoot!

Ouch. I can feel your pain from here. That was such a beautiful brush. Do you think you can repair the crack?

It happens. I split a nice old Gillette logo brush from Rubberset a while back that made me sick to my stomach.
That bottom is salvageable too. Another ferrule might fit it or can be made. That's a nice looking color on the bottom there.

It won't really squeeze back together, but I probably can fill and repair it. I'm trying to figure out what happened.....
The knot too tight?
I sanded the walls of the brush too thin?
Had a flaw, and just old brittle plastic?
Soaking the brush expanded the knot?
The crack just appeared. I've used the brush 20-30 times and never dropped it. Ideas?

What is inside it ? Two part epoxy and/or something else ? Expansion isn't outside the realm of possibility.
Neither is old brittle cheap plastic.

Sometimes the plastics and Bakelite handles simply "dry" to the point that they crack due to chemical separation.
I have had that happen on some older radio cases as well. Never dropped or injured but the polymers separate over time "dry" and a stress fracture become a complete break.

If you want to get rid of the bottom half of it, let me know. I wouldn't mind turning a new ferrule for that. I love that bottom.

That last pic is gorgeous. I'm so sorry man. I'll pray to the shaving gods for a healthy and successful re-restore. Good luck to ya.

Yes, it's a nice one. I am just going to think this one through for a while....I would surely like to do something with the handle, the bottom of it it just gorgeous. But....we'll see. Bob......do you have a 30mm chubby handle?

Awwww. I just asked about this one too. Sorry this happened John, maybe you could get a new top turned for it?? Hate to see a great handle fall apart.

You may as well try a repair. What are you going to do? Break it? My approach would be to put some slow-cure clear epoxy in the cracks, and then put a strip of something like milk bottle material over it as a non-stick, then maybe a thin padding layer (innertube rubber? cork?) and tighten it all down with a hose clamp. I bet you can close it up with something like that. Let it cure and do a bit of sanding and polishing.
