Avatar review

I plan on going tomorrow if I can find some friends to take(no one else seems excited about this movie).

I heard the plot is "Dances with Wolves in space" and is pretty mediocre but the special effects are fantastic. I live kinda close to an IMAX 3d so I plan on checking it out.

That would be the plot and it works for me.Its all special effects with this movie and it is the best 9 dollars I ever spent. This was also my first 3d movie. If I had to choose between a mint meat chopper for $10 bucks and seeing this movie again, I guess I'd be sitting on my behind for 2 and a half hours.

2 more thumbs up here, it was a great movie! Yes, the general theme is a little cliche'd (white man comes in and saves the natives) but even given that, I really enjoyed it

I managed to catch the 3D preview show a day before release and I have to agree - it's 160 minutes of pure awesome. Now I really want to see the IMAX 3D version!

Taking my son and nephews to see it later today. Unfortunately the nearest IMAX theater is close to an hour away, so it will have to be the 3-D version.

Is there any more to this movie than the visual effects? I just saw the trailer and it convinced me to never see this movie and the plot seems a bit thin...

+1 - Nothing I've seen or heard has convinced me to even put this in my Netflix queue. I guess I feel like I'm missing something.

And herein lies the problem. James Cameron spent $500Mil making this movie. He needs to make a ridiculous amount of money to come out on top. But it's not going to have the widespread appeal of his previous effort, Titanic. Avatar is a "geek" movie. The thing that allowed Titanic to make $600 million (off a $200 mill cost) was the "Leo DeCaprio effect" of all the teen girls going to see it over, and over, and over.
I'm sure Avatar will make a disgusting amount of money, but i don't think it will do anywhere near as well as Titanic in terms of amount of profit compared to production cost.

That said -- I'm going to see it. But then, I'm a "geek".

I think the plot is a accurate representation on american history and I find it compelling. We discover a new land,in this case a new world. Then proceed to kill off the inhabitants so we can consume its resources for our own personal greed.

Can't say I'm motivated to see it either. I want a great story, first-class acting, and it's nice to have great cinematography when possible. Movies that are excuses for special effects seem to be the norm now, much to my dismay. It's not that I don't appreciate special effects too, but they should be in support of a great story, not the other way around.

This movie has nothing to offer but lots of cgi. If that's what you like to see in a movie then knock yourself out. If you want good story, character development, acting, etc just save your money. Cameron hasn't been involved in a project I liked since Aliens in 1986. I don't forsee that changing.

Leonardo DiCaprio has made a lot of movies, before and after Titanic. None of them have made anything close to the amount Titanic made. Titanic was so successful because it was a well rounded movie. It had action, romance, special effects, a huge hit soundtrack (both orchestral and the song by Celine Dion) and a pretty good story with quality acting by the entire cast. I'm not a teen girl and I saw Titanic twice in theaters, which I've only done with a select few movies. It was so successful because it appealed to everybody, until it became popular to rag on it. But you're right, DiCaprio DID contribute a good amount with the young girl demographic.

And you're also right that Avatar won't be nearly as successful. If the Dark Knight couldn't overtake Titanic, Avatar definitely will not.

All of that said, I am looking forward to seeing it. It looks like a fun movie and I'm interested in seeing how these special effects are supposed to revolutionize movies.

I haven't seen any of the reviews yet, but it looks like a good movie, and unless it gets horrible (not just bad) reviews from people I trust, then I'm definitely going to see it. If only for the grown-breaking effects.

As for the plot... I don't think is a "Dances with Wolves in Space". However, the main plot is very much the same as the sci-fi story Call Me Joe by Poul Anderson. I don't know if Cameron names it in the credits. Didn't he get sued over The Terminator for the same thing?

Titanic was a success because teen girls were going to see it multiple times, up to 10-15 in some cases from what I remember.

I feel similarly...and the fact that I am not at all interested in the Fantasy/Sci-Fi genre means that I will not be going to see it.
From what I've heard, it does have an fairly ambitious plot, but it just feels so over-the-top, I can't bring myself to go.

I'll probably go see this with my kids. The reviews both good and bad aren't really making me want to go see this movie.

I typically hate these types of Fantasy movies...I saw it last night in 3D and was simply floored for 2 and a half hours!!!! I have never seen ANYTHING close to this movie. If you can see it in 3D it is a must...it really is!!
