Avatar is 160 minutes of awesome.

Is there any more to this movie than the visual effects? I just saw the trailer and it convinced me to never see this movie and the plot seems a bit thin...

+1 - Nothing I've seen or heard has convinced me to even put this in my Netflix queue. I guess I feel like I'm missing something.![]()

And herein lies the problem. James Cameron spent $500Mil making this movie. He needs to make a ridiculous amount of money to come out on top. But it's not going to have the widespread appeal of his previous effort, Titanic. Avatar is a "geek" movie. The thing that allowed Titanic to make $600 million (off a $200 mill cost) was the "Leo DeCaprio effect" of all the teen girls going to see it over, and over, and over.
I'm sure Avatar will make a disgusting amount of money, but i don't think it will do anywhere near as well as Titanic in terms of amount of profit compared to production cost.
Can't say I'm motivated to see it either. I want a great story, first-class acting, and it's nice to have great cinematography when possible. Movies that are excuses for special effects seem to be the norm now, much to my dismay. It's not that I don't appreciate special effects too, but they should be in support of a great story, not the other way around.
