I was recently on vacation in Vancouver, BC. I read about Atkinsons of Vancouver in a "where to shop" thread here on B&B and made it a priority for my trip. I'm glad I did.
Atkinsons is a fine goods shop near Granville Island in Vancouver. They have been selling shaving gear for a number of years, although this is only a small portion of their inventory. Everyone in the store is very friendly and helpful, but J.J. is the go-to guy regarding shaving supplies. I mainly visited to handle (and potentially purchase) a Plisson shaving brush. Atkinsons stocks primarily the High Mountain White range, with a large number of size 12 brushes, as well as a few size 16 and 20. I'm pretty sure they have the smaller sizes, but I didn't check them out. They have both 3-band and 2-band versions of Plisson HMW, with a good selection of handle types. J.J. noticed the look of sticker shock in my eyes, and he asked if I was a member of one of the shaving forums. I told him yes, and he mentioned that Atkinsons offers a 20% discount to forum members. Yes, that's right, a 20% discount. That made up my mind to purchase a brush, and J.J. was very patient with me while I agonized over my decision. After selecting the brush, J.J. offered me yet another "discount." He explained that if we shipped the brush to my home in Austin, TX, I would save another $40-50 in taxes. While it was very difficult for me not to walk out of the shop with the brush, I couldn't pass on the savings. All in all, I had an excellent experience with Atkinsons.
Other than Plisson brushes, Atkinsons sells Joris razors and brushes. And they sell a number of Penhaligons and Floris products.
If you happen to visit Vancouver, BC, or if you are in the market for a Plisson brush, I highly recommend visiting Atkinsons or contacting J.J. via email (contact info is on their website at www.atkinsonsofvancouver.com).
