Astra blades

I think it's just the coating. The Astra SP stands for Superior Platinum, so the blade is platinum coated at least. The SS variation should be just stainless steel, unless someone corrects this. I am not a blade or coatings expert.

What I have found, for my skin, is that coated blades work much better for me. Plain SS blades seem to irritate my skin and not give me a smooth shave. Obviously, others find the opposite to be true. I would try a 5 pack of each and see what you think. For me, Astra SP is consistently sharp and smooth. I can throw it in any razor and get a baseline shave and get to know the razor. There are sharper blades out there, but on my own sharpness scale I rate the Astra between 80-85 on a scale of 100.

I agree with you. It belongs to the coating.

In my experience the SS blade is sharper at the beginning. But they lose sharpness very fast. After four shaves they become dull.
With the SP blades I get six good shaves.

+1 The Astras are quickly becoming my go-to blade. I think that when I get through my current (and varied) inventory, I will probably stick with them for all of my razors.
