What's new

Aren't we all just a little... weird?

So while I'm waiting for my first DE razor I've been perusing the boards, making shopping lists and whatnot. How is it possible that a bunch of guys are talking so eruditely and passionately about 'shave dens,' oils, lotions, fragrances, etc. Just how weird is this? And how much more metrosexual am I going to be after I really get into "wetshaving"?

If I end up redoing my bathroom so I can fit all my shaving gear, there must be something wrong.

Weird? Yes.
Little? not likely. ;) Depends on the guy
Metrosexual? Not unless you were well on your way before.

All IMO, of course. :D I'm not metro at all, and I love the rose shaving cream that I just got today.

Quite the contrary to being metrosexual, good grooming has always been the staple of a gentleman.
No need to list all the well groomed tough guys is there?
The size of your shave den and the quantity of items you buy to fill it has always been up to the individual.
Procure what you need and what you want to get to the level that you think you have what is necessary, but not so much that you feel like you're overdoing it.

But yes, we are a little weird.

Well said!

IMO -

You are better off with an Astra, Iridium or Feather.

Actually, I prefer the Red IP to the Lord.

But YMMV and all that.

It's possible, since wet shaving only attracts the finest people. It's not weird at all. A fusion cartridge is weird! :biggrin1:

As to being more metrosexual, unlikely, unless you were already metro. Besides using vintage DE's, old fashioned barber shop after shave scents, and fine creams and soaps is not Metro.

+1 Except for being a "little weird" - Intrepret that as you may.

If this is weird, I don't want to be normal.

After the initial shock wore off ("you bought another soap?") the only items that have elicited a comment from my girlfriend were a pair of military brushes; which she fondly refers to as my horse brushes.

Additionally, a +1 each for Phil and Lou; two well phrased responses highlighting the better aspects of our hobby.

To be honest....I was the guy who made fun of those who took hobbies this seriously...especially something as goofy as shaving. When I stumbled upon these forums my first thought was "Wow.....there definitly is a group for everything." but after lurking around and finding so much info about shaving..i switched over to DE wetshaving and havent looked back. So maybe I have either become numb to how weird this is or maybe i just realized what i missed out on. Either way, found a more economical and enjoyable way to shave and the ppl here are awesome

Relax . . . you are not weird. You are unique. Like everybody else.

Weird? Definitely. Although I'd prefer "unique". Metrosexual? **** on that.

I am sitting here in a flannel jacket and boxer shorts, drinking a hefty pour of Basil-Hayden. A K-Bar is sitting on the coffee table, next to a book about investment theory, and the space heater is blowing warm air on my legs to stay warm. My next glass of whiskey is Blantons, since I'm out of Basil-Hayden.

Without question I am a weirdo. Only you can say if you are a metrosexual.

I, sir, am not.

. . .“There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.”. -H.S.T.

Yep, I'm weird I guess. In my defense my peculiarities predate the wetshaving, my latest hobby.

I don't think it's a metrosexual thing at all. I'm not primping myself up or wearing mens makeup. Quite the opposite... gone back to do things old school; a time when men were men so to speak. I'm doing things like my Dad and my Grandad and I can tell you, they were not metro.

Having said that, I can also see how it could appear a little weird. My wife certainly laughs at me. I've really taken control of the bathroom. Cleaned it up, organized it, keep my things set up nice. No different than any hobby though. If you collected guitars, you would set your guitar room up in a way that allows you to best appreciate your collection, while maintaining proper humidity and even heat.

I see this as a group of men who have a passionate interest in history and tradition, preservation of a lost art, craftsmanship and trying new things... I don't see this as just about shaving. It's no different than other interests such as gourmet cooking, classic cars or fine wines. I'm a little obsessive compulsive about a few things and I suspect many people here are the same.
