Are these the same?

Hi All
Long time no post, life's been busy. Although still wet shaving :001_smile

If it's not too rude to come straight back on with a question?

I'm looking at trying a new razor and have been looking at a Merkur HD 34c

I've found one on one site and one that looks the same on another site.
Are these the same razor with a different number or two different models?

I work near the second place so can go and buy direct so save on postage

Many thanks

Roy

The second one appears to be a Merkur HD ... never heard it called a MK1001, though.

The HD goes by several different model numbers. It could be called an HD, a 34, a 178 ... these are all valid names for the same razor.

BTW, the prices on that website look a tad high. Both the MK1001 and the FUTUR are priced about 40% above normal for an eVendor here in the States. Not to mention shipping and handling on top of that.

Since the second shop is local to you, go in there and check it out. See how the razor feels in your hand. Do a few "dry runs" without a blade. Maybe pick up a pack of blades or some soap as a gesture of good faith to the shopkeeper. But don't buy the razor there. Shop around on the InterWebs and you can find the same thing for about 25 GBP.

Whatever you want to call it, the HD is a great razor. Every shave den on the planet should have one in rotation.

The 180 or I think it's 38 but not sure, is the same head as the 34c just with a longer handle

Is this true across the merkur range or just these two razors?
Does the longer handle effect the handling much, adversely or otherwise?
Or is this another ymmv moment )

Thanks Roy

This is true across the entire Merkur range. All the razors have multiple Identifiers, and they do not follow any logical pattern.

Somewhere in the ShaveWiki or elsewhere in a separate thread, there may be a chart that lists all the different Merkur models and their corresponding numbers and names.

A longer handle makes the razor heavier, which adds to the cutting power since "The weight of the razor does the work." Also, lengthening the handle changes the razor's Center of Gravity, which requires a slight modification to one's technique and how to hold it and navigate it around your face.

Thanks, but was asking more about the same heads. Do all merkurs have the same head, with different handles (like the EJ range)?

Thanks again
Roy

Merkur has 3 types of heads on their DE (non-adjustable) razors ... the Straight Bar, Open Comb, and Slant. The Straight and OC models come in both 2 and 3 piece designs. The Slant is only available as a 2 piece.

Each of the Merkur Adjustables has its own unique design ... this would include Progress, Futur and Vision.

The OP's orignal question was about the HD / 34 / 178 / MK1001(?) ... this is a good choice no matter how long you've been shaving and what type of beard you have. The decision on whether or not to buy this model is a no-brainer. The only thing left is to figure out where to buy it from.

Personally, I like 3-piece razors, as they offer more possibilities to swap out parts and interchange handles.

Just a guess: I think the MK1001 is a vendor specific (stock?) number, not referring to a manufacturer's part number.
You're probably right ... many companies do this. They have an internal SKU which is different from the UPC or the Mfr. name ...

... but, you would think that this vendor would want to call it by its proper name(s) so that customers know what they're buying. If someone searches their website for "34C" this item would never show up, even though that is what the customer wants to buy.
