Aqua Velva Lime

Did Aqua Velva at one time make a lime scented AS? I am wanting to believe they did. Can someone tell me if I am right or wrong? I was thinking I saw a bottle in my dad's shave drawer a number of years ago.

Yep, I got some for Christmas one year in early High School (graduated in '87)... a 3-pack as I recall... Blue, Lime, & Musk.

Almost everybody has had a lime scent at one time or another, including Aqua Velva with their Frost Lime. Good stuff. Redwood was a great scent, too. You don't hear much about that one though. It was often sold in a two or three pack with the Ice Blue and the Lime.

I have heard good things about the other versions, I can only hope that will bring them back one day :frown: I would love to try them.

Does the AV frost lime suffer from some of the same issues as other vintage lime AS (in that it doesn't age well)?

A little off topic, but is the current Aqua Velva Classic Ice Blue the original Aqua Velva scent off of which all the other AV variants are spun? Has it changed at all over the years? If it isn't the original, which one is?

Geez, don't do that to me! My heart skipped a beat or two when I read the title of this thread. Something else to need . . .

The original hasn't been around (officially) since the fifties, at least in this country. It was replaced by the Ice Blue in '57. The scent, to my nose, is pretty much the same as the original brown Aqua Velva. The only significant change was in the color.

Not at all. Vintage Lime decay seems to be pretty brand specific in most cases, especially Old Spice. I've never found a corrupted bottle of Frost Lime.

In other words, I take it going with today's Ice Blue is still a nice blast from the past. I finally succumbed to all the talk and picked up a bottle from my corner Albertson's. I'd been resisting it because of its scent, but I noticed that a number of splashes that have for some time been languishing in the back of my closet have recently been growing on me, so I figured that might also be the case with the AV. A full bottle of it costs less than samples I would order from some vendors once shipping is factored in, so what have I got to lose? I'll be using it soon; I just want to make sure it's on a day where the only people I'll be around are ones I trust to tell me what they think of the way I smell, rather than judging me for it.

BTW, did the original AV have as much/any menthol as the current Ice Blue?

I'm not particularly menthol sensitive. It's hard for me to gauge the effect between the original and the current Ice Blue, but they seem about the same. They had to have had some reason for having "Aqua" in the title before it was blue, so it had to be because of the menthol. Possibly flawed logic, but hey, that's what I pieced together. :wink2:

The scent of Aqua Velva is one of those classic metamorphosis frags that smell completely different on me than it does in the bottle, and even moreso when the sweat starts to kick in. I love it, and yes it smells about as classic and classy as a cheap aftershave can.

Really? The original was brown?

Not to derail this thread, but where does the AV Original Sport that we get up here fit in the history of AV? Is it close to the original?

I was just in Canada and picked some green Original Sport up. It was like 4 usd for a big bottle, so I couldn't resist. It is a decent scent that goes on nicer than it smells in the bottle. It seems like it would go well with a nice sandalwood soap. Doesn't touch blue ice for me though.

Aside from that, I would also love to know the history of this green bottle of Aqua Velva so elusive to us US residents.

I have been wanting to try that one. What is the scent like? I take it possibly woodsy, since you mentioned compatibility with sandalwood. Is it that far off from the Ice Blue? I'd also like to get my hands on some o' that Frost Lime.

I have two bottles of the green that a friend picked up for me in Canada... I have to say that the scent grew on me. In the bottle I didn't care for it much at all, but I still used it a few times for the sake of novelty and the more I use it the more I like it. I especially like to use it with Proraso. I really can't describe the scent, but it's nothing like Ice Blue.

Well, it is very woodsy I would say, but after awhile I began to recognize that spicy, smoking-old-man scent that I know from my Trumper's sandalwood cream (I am picking up some AoS Sandalwood soap asap). The green Original Sport has this ending note that nearly replicates sandalwood to my nose. The stuff smells awful in the bottle though, like floor cleaner. It's growing on me as well.

Cool. That's how I felt about Ice Blue. I recently saw the error of my ways, and recognized the power of the Aqua V. In the bottle, Hell no! On the face, dry, well okay then! I may have to procure some of that here in a while.
