Anything less aggresive than muhleR41? looking to buy one, not sure

HI all! Learned ALOT here about shaving! this truley is the best forum! mi almost obssesed with it! i have bougth a few saftey razors, past year westcoastshaving. one was the 1904? open comb from merkur...has a stylish handle, shaved smooth n ok, but not quite down to skin(underskin) level. got the merkur slant ( stuby one) chewed my face up pretty good. have a 1942? gillette tch, i got from IMA usa.com ;ast year. smooth and great shaver! but not close enough. still have a barely noticble shadown..jsut barely if looking hard. i want to shave and eliminate that.
so! reading, everyone seems to like the muhle R41...and also read it can/wil bite if not used properly. i see thiers a Muhle r89, and a r 101? thinkit was...what would be precisly, one step back, from a muhle r41? i had loked at the futur, and the progress. any ideas? im REALLy tempted on the muhle r 41...for a super close near under skin shave...but without the bite.

I would recommend a Joris. They are aggressive, but not as aggressive and more comfortable than the R41. They also are all-brass (most razors are not). Their designs are beautiful and their workmanship is top-notch.

You could try an adjustable out first. The Futur is a fairly aggressive adjustable or try a progress/Mergress and keep cranking until you get a reference point. I'm getting close to maxing the Mergress every time but it's allowed my technique to improve in sync with the razor. The Futur overlaps a little and goes farther. Both razors sell well if you need to keep cranking it up. No matter what you end up with, some other razor will catch your eye anyway so resistance is futile. Try any and all is the best approach!

Thanks all:) I would DEF like to keep this between a Muhle or a merkur, becaue those are the ones that seems most popular, affordable. what would be a merkur or muhle one step back from a muhle R41? The muhle R89?

IMO, a step down from the R41 would be a Tradere OC.

Other options may include
Joris
Fatip
Gillette New Improved
Gem 1912
Gem OCMM

But I would consider these all to be on the aggressive side.
As always, YMMV

And the R89 is a great razor. The other Muhle open combs I found to be generally mild.

If you want the cheaper way: Cadet open-comb, FaTip; you can also try shimming the razors that you have; one shim will transform your tech into a better shaver.
Adjustables are very nice: Progress, Futur
Expensive way: Tradere, Joris,

I have a Muhle R89 AND a Mekur 34C....either will do you fine

Till the end of '08 Mühle had two razors (also called the R41 and R89) and both were actually Fatip OC razors with different plating and handles. Officially not a Mühle of course these days but the Fatip is a little step down from the latest R41 but still quite an animal. The obvious choice if you ask me.

The R89 is NOT one step below the R41. They are both opposites on the scale, the R89 is very mild and the R41 is very aggressive.
However, if you buy it you can sell it very easily, Muhle razors are wanted and there is a great demand for.

What concerns me is that you write that the Merkur 37C slant chewed up your face. Why would you be looking at something more aggressive? I, too began with a Merkur open comb but liked the Edwin Jagger DE89 better. The TECH is really mild so it requires a different TECHnique to use it for a close shave. You should give the slant another chance. I use mine whenever I have more than a day's growth of beard. I take pains not to press on it at all and it has never bit me. The slant, when properly used, will give you that cut below the skin feel.

Thanks again all! YEs, the merkur 37c pretty much cut me good first time using it, back in april..never used one before. so obviously, i must develop a technique to properly use it. I was lookig at the muhle R41, because it looked like a normal head saftey razor, without the slant* so! was wondering the next step below an R41, incase it was too aggrressive for me..int he merkur?muhle line. progress? futur? perhaps?

Ive read the progress has a 9? level adjusting thing...so at level 9, would that be close, VERY close? identical? to a muhle 41? or a slant?

I have the Merkur 37C slant razor, which I did not make clear in the earlier post. It has never cut or bit me. I have used it 5 or 6 times now. The key to using it is to apply no pressure. Don't hurry. Maintain a good blade angle. If you concentrate on these things you will not be injured using this razor.

Either model of the Merkur slant. Short handle 37c or long handle 39c will give you shaves equal to your R41 but with little to no irritation.

Here is a review of both I did a while ago where I gave myself an 8 pass shave with the 2 slants

I would suggest a Fatip, or a Sabi. They are both my one step down razor from the new R41 design. I like my Merkur Progress as well but for me I like it on the less aggressive side. I've heard here the Sabi is similar too or has the same head as the Mariner.
