Anyone smoke plug tobacco?

When I was in Ireland many decades ago as a teenager, I remember seeing my uncle and a neighbor smoking plug tobacco. The plug looked very waxy and dense, they would carve off a hunk with a pocket knife and smoke it in their pipes. I have never seen that done since. Seems it would be difficult to light, but apparently it wasn't. Anyone use this type of tobacco and is it widely available?

I smoke several plugs, currently in rotation are Jackknife plug, Grousemoor Plug, and Cob Plug. The latter 2 are by Samuel Gaweth and are more difficult to light unless rubbed out well the former is GL Pease and isn't as dense so can light a little easier. But as you get used to any given tobacco, or anything at all really, you become accustomed to dealing with its idiosyncrasies with ease.

I dabble around with SG Black XX rope. It smells good prelight but knocks me on my buttocks if I puff too fast. Taste wise I haven't decided if I like it yet.

Edit: rope, plug, tomato, tomatoe :).

Edit edit: I know they are not the same, but similar enough no?

I've tried Gawith's XX black rope and it was too powerful for my taste. I passed it off to a friend.

Interestingly, my tobacconist once told me that coal miners would buy rope tobacco by the plug to chew in the mines (not being allowed to smoke for obvious reasons), then, after their shifts they would let that same plug dry out and rub it in into pipes to smoke. He claimed, and I don't know if I believe this part, that to further extend the life of that tobacco plug the miners would keep the dottle from their pipe bowls and sniff it like snuff. Now that's frugal.

I dunno if I'd want to stick that rank dottle up the snoz

YMMV, but I doubt it. Unless you're a sado-masochist that likes to get dizzy and brush your teeth a lot. I'll let you know if it mellows out after five years or so.:wink2:

No.

I know you smoke some plug BB, what are your opinions on a few of the ropes mentioned?
Serious Tobacco flavor and strength, the SG Black XX (steamed or cooked brown rope) is surprisingly smooth with and meaty taste kinda like steak, the brown ropes are not as smooth and are stronger in nicotine, they are basically just full unprocessed tobacco leaves twisted into a rope form, pretty heavy stuff, Something for a change of pace but I rarely smoke them.

Is the OP talking about plug tobacco that is normally chewed? Or the rope style for pipes? I find that plain ole shredded(if that's what you what to call it) is the easiest to deal with.
