What's new

Anyone know this blade?

Hiya,

Well, one of the benefits of being around a lotta smart guys is being able to get an answer to something. I picked up some of these blades a while back and can't for the life of me figure out what I have here. I've used a couple and they're not bad. I normally will use either Iridiums or Feathers. and these blades aren't quite as sharp. This blade seems to work best in a more aggressive than usual type razor, since a milder blade works best for me in those types.

On the box bottom, "100 double edge blades" is printed. Other side of the blade says "super stainless steel blade", with a #1 on the arrow. I'd sorta like to know what I'm shaving with....just for the heck of it. I even checked Achim's site with no luck.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Martin

Oh, the slight discoloration on the blade is due to it being used in the past.

Which blade? the one on the left, or right?

One on the right is a Gillette Super Stainless "Spoiler," one of the best blades Gillette ever made.

I don't recognize the blade on the left.

Hi again,

My fault for not explaining the blades are the same in that pic. I just showed one in the original wrapper and another unwrapped. Sorry for the confusion.

For some reason, I get the feeling this is an older blade. I bought these at a flea market a while ago, with about half the blades gone from the box. Well, maybe Dex's thought about em is correct. I couldn't find an exact match when I tried looking em up, so who knows.

Thanks to the members who responded.........any other ideas?

Martin

Heh, actually, Dex is correct about em being Spoilers. After reading what he posted, I got out a pack of Spoilers and sure enough...........same blade. Sheesh. So am I to understand the Spoilers weren't made in the US?

Well at least I know what I've got here now. Turns out I'd just never seen em in bulk this way before. Thanks for the help.

I'm not convinced that the two blades pictured are the same. The unwrapped one is a Spoiler as noted above in this thread. The wrapped blade has one arrow and says Super Chromium. It is clearly not a wrapped Spoiler blade. I don't think Gillette ever used wrappers on the Spoilers as they were sold in dispensers. They are two different blades for certain.

I'm with SA on this one, the wrapped blade is not a Spoiler. I'd be really surprised if you had a large box of wrapped Gillettes--that would have been a marketing no-no from Gillette's POV.

The Spoiler was made in the US, tho Gillette did make a Super Stainless (or was it a platinum coated blade?) in the UK. Both, now that I think of it. But to my knowledge, they were all dispensered. They did make a few blades for the Canadian market that were paper-wrapped, but they look nothing like the blade on the left.

Perhaps the blade on the left is a Sheffield, as pointed out?

Hi there,

Yep, you're right.........this was actually the blade in the wrapper. Sheesh, I have no idea how I screwed this up. I must have been confused when posting the first pic of the Spoiler blade.

Thanks for the help. Oh, any idea of what this blade might actually be?

I don't have a firm answer, but the more I think about it the packaging leads me to believe it might be an ASR product, even tho haiti222 has indicated the plant was actually in Scotland. Seems like their packaging, anyway. If they shave well you should use them.

Does the blade say the same thing on both sides?

Also, I don't know about vintage blades, but every modern made ASR blade I've ever seen has a alphanumeric code on the short end.
