What's new

Anyone have experience with a Timor Straight?

Hi Guys,

I was honing a few of my (extensive number of) vintage straights and I came across a new Timor razor that I'd bought around 5 years ago but never really looked at.

The Timor, although new, just didn't seem to take a decent edge though! A grubby old Kropp and an other old Sheffield razor came up shave-ready in no time, but the Timor just has me baffled, it looks the business with Blonde Scales and Gold Wash on the Blade.

I'll have another go tonight, maybe I was just over-tired by the time I got to it at 11:00pm

I suppose this answer to another post on Timor answers my question:

'I second Legion and Greybeard, they are a major PITA to hone and the resulting edge is good for two shaves maximum if you have a tough beard.'

Oh, well...

Old Timors were good - but I think I read that new ones were likely to be cheap Pakistani or Chinese offerings. I was tempted to try one once, but I never followed up on them.

I think the Timors are still made in Germany (I think...) but yeah, I haven't enjoyed the ones that crossed my path.

I have tried honing two of them and they were a pain in the ***! Took me forever to put an edge on them. They came out ok but more trouble than they are worth.

That's what I'm finding - I've consigned the Timor to a drawer (again) until I can be bothered to spend time honing it. It's remarkable that the razors made from anywhere between 50 years ago and 200 years ago, that I have hone up in no time, I've never come across one that causes problems.

All the factories are gone, all the skills are gone, Sheffield used to be a world leader in razor manufacture (just doing a little bit of complaining - I must be getting old :)
