Anyone have any good bloody mary recipes?

Hey guys,

Ive been know to drink a bloody merry or two when I have an early flight or layover, but would now like to start making them at home.

So does anyone have a from scratch type recipe or a way to dress up a pre made bloody merry mix?

Thanks

How I make mine:

Vodka (quantity varies depending on how fast I want to get blotto)
V-8 juice
Ground celery seed
salt
Black pepper
Tabasco sauce
Worcestershire sauce

We drink them spicy.

Absolute Peppar 2-3 oz (presently trying Kirkland vodka)
Zing Zang Premix 8 oz
Couple dashes of Sriracha (optional ground horseradish)
On the rocks with a garnish

You guys forgot the fresh ground horseradish.

This is a key element to a quality bloody mary. You can use a box style cheese grater with the side that has round holes in it, or just go for a microplane to grind the stuff. Adds a healthy dose of zing.

Here's something interesting: The old Trader Vic's Bartender's Guide from 1947 simply asks for 1.5oz vodka in a champagne glass topped off with chilled tomato juice and a lemon slice. Rather minimalist, I suppose. The Embury classic "The fine art of mixing drinks" from 1958 (a revised reissue originally from 1948) goes along similar lines; one part vodka to two to six parts tomato juice, but mentions the optional addition of tobasco, worcestershire, or A1 sauce along with a tiny squeeze of lemon juice and/or a "paper thin slice of lemon floated on top". It seems like the celery was added later, likely as an excuse to call the drink breakfast :wink2:

The best way to get a good recipe worked up is to start with the basics and modify it to suit your tastes. Try it with premium vodka, or maybe juice your own tomatoes, experiment with spicy additives, and do be sure to share your masterpiece once you've "dialed it in" to perfection.

Happy mixing!

Bloody Mary's are like meatloaf; everybody makes it a little bit (or a lot) different. You really need to play around a bit to find a recipe that you like. Only use fresh ingredients (not a mix) and, as someone else suggested, start with basics, vodka, tomato juice, fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper (white). After that, you can play around with adding spices, celery salt/seed, lime instead of lemon, etc, etc. I believe that the original drink was made with gin ( http://www.smallscreennetwork.com/video/696/cocktail_spirit_red_snapper/ ), which isn't bad. I used to like the drink made with Aquavit instead of vodka, and have had it made with tequila. I found that, over the years, I started to favor a drink called a Bullshot, which is somewhat in the vein of a bloody (brunch, etc), but quite different. Set aside a afternoon with some friends and try experimenting; just be sure that you have a place to sleep.

The classic version is still the best - stand in front of the mirror in a darkened bathroom, hold hands and start chanting "Bloody Mary" in unison.
She should appear after about 20 times.

I do exactly the same but with no celery and some lemon juice (5 drops)

I made my own for a long time. I used Tomato Juice, Clamato, Trappey's Bull Sauce, Horseradish and some other stuff and would pre mix the vodka in a bottle and as they aged they got better and better (up to a point). That was until I discovered Zing-Zang. I love this mix. I usually just add Vodka but I will definitely try your recipe as I LOVE Huy Fong.

I made it for a while too. I'm not sure the mix is better but the convenience factor does it for me.

Mine is pretty simple.

V8
Worcestershire (Just a splash)
Juice of a quarter lime
3 good shakes Tabasco
Vodka, of course
one each large olive, pickled okra, celery stick.
Paper umbrella optional.

Most folks make them waaaaaaay too salty. Worcestershire is very salty. Boullion is extremely salty. The olive, the okra... salty. That's why easy on the worcestershire, and no extra salt. When available, I sometimes crush a sprig of cilantro and drop it in. I sometimes substitute Cholula for the Tabasco. Sometimes a dash of bitters or vermouth, sometimes a carrot stick or a pickled green bean. Pickled onion. (see a trend there? not everything pickled, tho... pick and choose just a couple) Horseradish and garlic, if I use either, I use very sparingly so as not to overpower the drink with these pungent aromas and flavors. I made a wasabi bloody mary once and I am sure I will do that again because it was pretty good and I want to experiment with less wasabi next time. There are lots of possible variations but the above recipe makes a good approximation of a standard Bloody Mary.

Zing zang mix is awesome. I can drink that stuff straight out of the bottle, don't even need the vodka. I like some olives and a big piece of celery in mine. I had a great bloddy mary in the Minneapolis airport a couple weeks ago. I had some time to kill so I stopped at a place called Ike's steak and chop house. Great place, great food. The BM was made from scratch. They rim the glass with coarse salt and ground pepper and comes with celery, large olive, lime, and jalapeno.

I'm going to just agree with the abbreviation shudder...

Also trying aquavit this weekend. I've had a bottle for a while but never considered it a Bloody Mary ingredient.

Can't believe how many suggestions for V-8 juice. Yuck! That stuff tastes awful to me. Of course, I'm not crazy about Feather blades either ... meaning, to each his own.

Love Zing Zang! IMO the best pre-mix out there right now.
