Anyone else do a NON-traditional Holiday meal?

The wife and I do not have a lot of living family/relitives so we always have our holliday meals here by ourselves. Over the years we have done some decidly non triditional holliday feasts (mexican xmas, Chineese thanksgiving etc).

This started for me back in 1962 when I was a member of the Calif youth orchestra and we did a concert tour of Mexico which spanned Thanksgiving.

The orchestra "chaperones" told the mayor of Guaymas (where the Thanksgiving concert was held) that they wanted a Thanksgiving "feast" prepared for the orchestra members since we would miss the one in the US. Seeing as there is no Thanksgiving in Mexico the people preparing the "feast" were told that it was a traditional American feast holiday where everyone ate turkey.

Well when it was served to us out in the town square we did not get the "typical" American roast turkey with stuffing, mashed spuds, gravy etc... We got a traditional Mexican feast except everything was made with turkey instead of the "normal" ingredients.

Ever since that time I have tried to have a non-traditional Thanksgiving feast of food of other nationalities but made with Turkey.

Anyone else out there do a non traditional holiday meal for xmas or thanksgiving?

I don't know if this is non-traditional but the past few years I've done this for Thanksgiving:

Roast joint of beef, Yorkshire puddings, mashed potatoes with an onion gravy, and a pie/tart of some sort. I also tend to make a starter like a quiche lorraine just for amusement value. I don't do turkey since mine never turns out as nicely as my mother's (which she does as a blend of Chinese/American spices/seasonings).

Every Xmas my dad does shrimp and king crab legs. plain boiled potato and salad. Everyone eats the seafood and are forced to eat one potato.

I am doing my first Tday and am going traditional, next time I will not I will make something like a 1940's British meal.

Like above, I used to do lobster or crab legs...something different.

This year the wife got a 20 pound fully cooked ham from work and then she brought home a 6 pound turkey breast from the store.

So I guess it's on the smoker with about half the ham and the turkey breast.

I bet making turkey tacos out of the breast would be great.

Sushhhh, no one tell SWMBO what I have planned. :biggrin1:

Just two of us, I've had everything from pasta to Mexican to Indian to Chinese to chicken to sandwiches to even turkey(rarely.) This year it's chicken.

Hot dogs, chips, and a fried cherry pie while on a road trip, this year's road trip will be pork roast, stuffing, potatoes and gravy with Butterfinger pie.

I never have turkey for Thanksgiving, I'm allergic to it:eek2:

I'll be smoking a turkey for Thanksgiving for a traditional meal. Every year though, we have Mexican, cajun, Italian, etc for Christmas because everyone gets their fill of tradition on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Lasagna !!!
My sister-in-law always refused to do traditional meals for the family at holidays. Lasagna was her thing to do. Then she blamed feeding a tablespoon of the lasagna to the dog for it's medical problems. After I started calling it her "lasagna of death" I haven't been invited back.

She claimed her boys didn't like turkey, ham or roast beef but they could sure tuck it in when it was served at anybody else's house!

Nope. Traditional as you can get. All Vegan Tofurkey, Gravy, Stuffing, Cranberry Sauce, Mashed Taters, Greens. Maybe a non-alcoholic wine to go with that.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Nope, not me. I absolutely love left over turkey sandwiches. Last year the daughter cooked, so we had no leftovers at home. Saturday after thanksgiving I went and bought a turkey because I couldn't take it anymore. I don't eat turkey very often, but I need it at this time of the year, for some reason.

My parents usually make Mulukhiyah on Christmas Eve.
And Egyptian peasant soup. Very hearty, very delicious, very disgusting looking..lol.

(the picture doesnt do it justice, usually thicker, not as brothy when mixed with chicken, rice, onions and pita chips)

I have to go to my in laws to get my turkey fix.

Yeah, beef wellington on one holiday, and rack of lamb on the other, sometimes salt crust filet or something else that's really good but a hassle to make. I've never liked turkey much, nor has most of my family. Think we're going to have Wellington with an artichoke "borek" I might try leeks in it. Maybe some spanakopita. Dont know how well it will all go together, but at least it should all taste good.

Just the two of us, I don't really care for ham (I prefer my pork in thin strips, burned to a crisp... or stuffed in a small tube).
Sometimes we'll do a couple or four Cornish Game Hens, sometimes a turkey breast filet.

We'll do something semi-traditional, just not whole-hog. No stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc... just what would normally suffice as a nice dinner, but with the beef, chicken, or fish replaced with some other fowl.

This year it'll be turkey breast, green beans, and she hasn't decided on mashed or rice.

Chocolate pie. We don't do pumpkin.

The wife came home with 2 uber thick killer Fillet Mignons yesterday evening so our Thanksgiving plans got a quick change.

I'll wrap them in bacon (everything goes better with bacon, even bacon taste better with bacon)

Will be out firing up the grill in a little while :001_smile
