Anybody ever try Listerine as an AS?

Last year I ran out of my old spice after shave. I did not get achance to purchase some more. I shaved and few small dribbles came out of the OS bottle. I was wondering what to do, then I recaled reading some time ago the Listering could be used as an aftershave. I did not have the actual Listerine, but I did have a generic brand, like Listerine. I splashed some on my face and it worked very well.

Several years ago I switched over from disposable plastic razors to a Weishi DE, TTO razor. The first shave left my face a little irritated. I had been using some Old Spice after shave and only had a small dribble left in the bottom of the bottle. Hardly enough to cover my face. I had some Western Family mouth wash. (like Listerine) 33.8 fluid ounces for around four dollars. I read the ingredients and figured there was not anything in it to hurt me, so I poured some in my hand and applied it to my face. The was a slight amount of sting that went away almost immediately. I waited a few seconds then applied the last of my Old Spice aftershave. The combination produces an interesting smell that I like. I have used the mouth wash as a splash, ever since. It seems to take the sting out and help heal any razor burn. I have since used numerous Bay Rums, Pinaud Clubman, Draggon Noir,Mennen and Stephens Spicy aftershave on top[ of the mouthwash. It all seems to blend in with the mouthwash a create a different fragrance that smells great.

I'm not sure where the notion came from that aftershave is necessary. Of the more than 10,000 shaves in my lifetime, I've used an aftershave probably less than 1% of the time. So, using mouthwash as aftershave never occurred to me.

As someone who used to use isopropyl alcohol as an aftershave, I don't see much problem with Listerine. At least the old school "medicine-y" stuff. The more modern minty flavors/smell would drive me nuts, though.

Mouthwash as aftershave? No, but there is a scene in the movie Play It Again, Sam, in which Woodie Allen takes a big mouthful of Canoe after shave and swallows it.

In one of my previous threads I asked about mixing witch hazel with a wintergreen alcohol for a A/S , because well i'm cheap
I was reading this today and thought well why not ,doller tree has mouthwash 18 oz for a dollar made by the same people who make ivy club etc , needless to say ... I liked it , wife did not complain at all about the smell so i think i may have just found the perfect (for me at least) cheap aftershave ,

up next i may just pore some the aqua velva knockoff from dollar tree into the mix just to see how it goes . :001_smile

Seems fitting to note, that Aqua Velva has a bittering agent added to it to prevent people from trying to drink it. Seems soldiers of the past, desperate for a buzz would drink their aftershave.:lol:

Personally, I wouldn't use Listering as a aftershave even though the ingredients are classed as safe and certainly not the flavoured varieties. It would be an effective antiseptic and a moderate anti-inflammatory but I would be concerned that it would dry the skin somewhat. However, adding a little glycerin would be of benefit and offset some of the drying effect of the alcohols.

Here is an older thread on this same topic.
