What's new

Any other Nest users here?

Is anyone else here using a Nest thermostat? I bought one shortly after we bought our house back in November. One of the best purchases I've made. I love the fact that it doesn't needlessly heat or cool when we aren't home and being able to change the temperature without having to get out of bed at night is fantastic!

I keep looking at those or rather they keep popping up as ads on my browser.
Our problem is we don't change the temperature in our house.
Someone is home all the time and our house is older anyway.

Still, If I had a newer place, I'd be real tempted to pick one up.

Yep. Got one six months ago from our real estate agent after we bought our home. Love it, but i can't figure out how to log in to the system with my own credentials. We have to share an account. It would be nice if others could be authorized on the account.

We find it to be smart and efficient. Not a novelty, for sure.

Same here.
Being able to adjust from the bedroom would be nice. We have a programmable thermostat, but it's still touchy. If we have it set so that it is not uncomfortable warm when going to bed, then it will be a bit chilly later on.
Set it so that it's not chilly later results in some odd "rapid heating" in the mid-morning on days that we sleep in as the sun warms the south wall.

I ended up just programming the thing to hold 74 all the time, except late morning where it kicks down to 72 to get a "head start" on the afternoon heat to make it easier to maintain.

And while my wife has a Nook tablet, neither of us has a smartphone, so one of the Nest's features would be very limited.

Can you explain the difference (pros and cons) of having it, compared to a regualr thermostat?

looks cool on the commercials (no pun intended)

It is similar to the more advanced thermostats in it's ability to be programmed for different temperatures at different times of day.
Like a few advanced programmables, it "learns" how long it takes your system to heat or cool, so it will activate the system early so the temperature is correct at the preset time, rather than simply moving to the new preset (my Honeywell does this, it will be 76 degrees up to the moment the program changes, then the system will turn on to attempt to bring it down to 74)

It differs from traditional programmable thermostats in that you have online control access from your smartphone or computer, so if the normal program is set to 76, and you are coming home early, you can manually drop it down to 74 before leaving work.
It is 2-way, so you can see what the actual temperature is from remote, which will help reduce the "surprise" factor if the system fails... you'll know something is wrong earlier in the day and can make preparations to get service before you get home and find the place at 90 degrees.

Your own credentials separate from others that you live with, or different from those set up by the installer/real estate agent?

Another big factor over other programmable thermostats is the "Auto-Away" feature. You set "safety thresholds", the coldest you ever want it to get and the warmest you ever want it to get. I use 60F and 90F. Then, if no one is home (as detected by a motion sensor in the unit) it won't bother to heat/cool the house. It knows what time to expect you back home based on your previous activity, so it will anticipate your expected behavior. This saves a good amount of energy. It also provides an energy usage read out that shows how long the system was operating for the previous day and then, if you've been efficient in your usage, gives you a "Green Leaf" (kind of like a gold star). I have to admit, I get a little bummed when I don't get my leaf for a day.

How does it handle an irregular sleep schedule? Sometimes my wife won't sleep for 48 hours, and other times she'll sleep for 24 (medical issues).
We also have an indoor cat moving around (occasionally).

As far as the pets, the sensor is angled such that it takes a person walking past to trip it. As far as an irregular sleep schedule... I'm not sure. I guess it's possible that it could think she's not home when she actually is. It does allow you to opt out of features like Auto-Away, so if you got a Nest and found that that feature didn't work out for you, it's a simple couple of clicks to disable it.
