What's new

Any of you gents love dogs?

I'm not ashamed to say that I sure do.

I've a mini rat terrier. A standard dachsund. A mini dachsund. And a chihauaua.

Please, tell us about your favorite dog.

I'll start.

My favorite is what is supposed to be a miniature wiener dog. That weighs about 25 lbs! Her name is Sugar, and I love that dog so much. She sleeps with me every night, and I might, on occasion, over feed her. LOL.
She thinks she's really a big dog. Sometimes, she feels a bit "saucy". You can tell because she'll have one ear tossed back. Other times you'll notice she has BOTH ears tossed back. That is when she is really a piece of work.
I love that dog like there is no tomorrow.

It depends on the dog.

A person who lives on an acerage and has a well trained German Shepherd or something like that, is something really great.

But the people who live around me and have little ****zus and other mutts that start barking their heads off as you walk past their backyard, I hate those ones. Or the good looking girls with little chihuahuas that they carry around like a fashion accessory.

Same thing with cats, I used to hate cats. But then a stray one showed up at our house and we adopted him and he actually had lots of personality and is tons of fun. He's like a dog, he plays fetch, he'll come for walks - not like a dog on a leash, but you go walking and he'll follow along, stopping to check things out along the way but when he sees you getting far he'll come galloping up to you.

Unfortunately I'd say that almost certainly the vast majority of peoples' dogs are the kind that bark, they take for walks and don't clean up after them, and so on. I guess it's all about training. A smart dog is great. Dumb ones can make visiting the owner intolerable.

Dumb dogs are dumb because their owners are lazy and witless.
I know what you mean about the lap dogs as fashion accessories, but it ain't just the Barbie Girls who do it, take a look around the park and see how many mentally emasculated men have Dobermans, Rottweillers and Pit Bulls. That's just as bad or worse as far as I'm concerned.

I love the Rotties, they are just such big hearted dogs, and it's a shame that they have a reputation as a "tough dog" because it makes schmucks want to buy them who shouldn't have responsibility over any living creature.

I'm sorry, but I have to disagree about cats.
Sneaky, shiftless and aloof - they are not to be trusted at any time.
If you discipline a dog, he tries to make it up to you.
If you discipline a cat, he craps in the linen closet.

Never complains, never needs anything more than food, water, love & attention, always happy for your arrival, always forgiving no matter your mood, always a loving companion...

Man's Best Friend!

I hate small dogs... this does not go well with living in NYC. I'm less not ok with big dogs but they need the room to be big and thats going on here either.

My cat went crazy as soon as I opened this thread and when she clams down she is getting a bath.

(damn I have boring friday nights)

I'm kind of with you on that one. My g/f has two small dogs. I really don't care for them. There's dogs, then there's German Shepherds. When we first got together she talked about keeping them kenneled at night. My argument was what if someone tried to come into the house. They sleep at the foot of the bed. :biggrin1: On the floor I mean.

I told my ex she could have any dogs or cats she wanted as long as she never asked me for children. We didn't have any pets.

I'm not sure I'm going to phrase it the same way with the new lady.

Well sure, cats are different. You don't get a cat if you're looking for an obedient campanion. But the cat we had and my parents now have anyhow, he's very playful, friendly, does funny things - like I can always remember when it was cool outside you'd go out in the garage and he'd be sleeping on the hood of the car because I guess it was warm from the engine lol, catches any mice that get in the house - that can be a big one.

Our cat, he was an outdoor cat, we never used a litter box and I guess he just went outside when he was out there, then when my parents moved and took him, they didn't want to let him out much at first out of fear he'd run away, they put out a litter box and he knew to use it.

And a cat does try to make it up to you. He'd kill bird - and now that he lives in the American south lizards lol, and then he brings them inside... And apparantly that is him wanting to show he's helping out by getting food for the family.

It's apples and oranges. Cats are more independent. Dogs are more social. I think whether one has personality and will be a good pet all has to do with how it is treated from a young age and how the owner trains them.

I personally don't think I'd ever go out and seek a pet. We had a couple cats growing up and they were always strays that showed up.

we need a cat thread, like right now.

We've got a wiener dog a mystery mutt poodle mix a Manchester Terrier a Pappion a Yorkie and a Chihuahua/Schnauzer mix

Our Chihuahua/Schnauzer Mix Lucy is a real tease & likes to tease the other dogs and she's also a problem solver she will keep trying till she overcomes any problem she encounters, we have our bedroom blockaded to keep out the dogs to give our cats some peace, she passes in and out of the bedroom at will luckily she gets along with the cats.
