Antique store razor. Any ideas?

Hey guys.

I was out at an antique store today, and i came across a really cool looking razor. In all honesty, I was there trying to find some old tobacco pipes, but when I saw this razor and the price ($15) I just had to get it. I am just curious if it is worth getting this guy cleaned up and honed, or if i should just keep it around to look at it. It has a little bit of rust and stuff, but for the most part the blade (in my newbie experience) looks to be ok. I want your guys opinions. Is this worth it?! (and please be honest!)

On one side it says F.W.E. Special and has two people, and on the other side it says F.W. Engels Solingen Gr. Germany.

You did a great job, Engels are really nice razors. Clean it up and get it honed, should make for a great shaver.

That's a nice looking razor from a very good maker. $15 is a bargain. Grab it, get it cleaned up and honed and use it.

Heck. Yes.

Nice catch! 15 bucks! Here, put it in perspective. you could spend 15 bucks on a pack of cartridges you throw away within a month. THAT razor, once honed, can last you the entirety of the rest of your life and the life of any male progeny you may have, used daily. The edge looks like it could use a decent amount of steel removal to get back to good stuff, but that spine certainly looks like it's not been honed many times. Don't get hung up about the spots on the blade, it's the edge that counts. Spots on the blade you can call "patina" and sound all fru-fru about it. doesn't change the shave. Soooo-perb.

It is an old, unsafe, beat up piece of junk and needs to be disposed of properly. Send it to me and I'll take care of that for you.

I'm jealous. Nice find. Try Mother's polish first. If that doesn't work use 2000 grit wet paper or higher if you can find it and use it only on the rusted areas not the whole blade. Then polish. Good luck.

Hey guys,

Just thought I would update you on this razor. I went to the store the other day and bought some stuff to clean the razor up (the supplies cost less than $15 total). And here is how I got it looking. I am pretty happy with it. I hope you can tell how much better it looks now. I sent it off to get honed today and as soon as it comes back I will be ready to shave with it!

That turned out nicely. I'm thinking that wandering around junk shops and car boot sales might be the best route to old razors with good potential. Even pretty nasty looking examples go on ebay for quite a bit of money considering that they often come with awful photographs and could have serious wear issues you can't see in a bad camera phone image. That looks great and I hope it does a good job when honed. I'm a beginner so I would be wary of that square point. I get enough nicks with my round point.

That came out really great. Love those scales for sure. I don't think it's nicks you have to worry on with the square point, more of slices. I learned fast when I tried my first square point, extra attention must be paid to where that point is when you are using other parts of the blade. lol

Yeah - that sounds right. I sliced my cheek pretty convincingly with a shavette about three weeks ago. That was the equivalent of a square point, come to think of it. I was also clumsy and made a slicing motion on my second ever open blade shave. I hadn't quite got used to when to change hands and made an awkward move which led to a rapid reddening of the suds on my right cheek.

Great work esp for a newbie, u should be proud, great brand and those scales are awesome, Love the green ends with the initials. great score.
