Antique Barber Chair Question

I recently bought a 1937 Paidar barber chair, refurbished it, and put it in my master bathroom. It took a little convincing for the Mrs. to get onboard with the idea. The chair hadn't been touched in 40 years, and had some rust/grease/dirt accumulation, not to mention the lovely pale green porcelin. But now that it's cleaned up, she loves it. My wife and daughter are both cosmetologists and cut family members hair in the chair, and I sit in it with a warm towel wrapped around my face before shaving. Finally to my question. Anyone out there familiar with the childrens seat attachments for these chairs? I have several grandchildren and have made a makeshift seat that rests across the chairs arms. There are two plated, cast posts on the outside/end of the arms that I believe helped secure the child seat attachment, but am not sure.

Welcome to the forum. We would love to see a picture of your barber chair.

Sorry, but I don't know the answer to your question.

The barber I take my 20-month old son to just uses a wooden booster seat (shaped like a box basically) for him. He's probably like most kids that are terrified. My son doesn't cry, he just sits there like a statue with a bottom lip quivering but no noise.

We just watch him to make sure he doesn't fall.

If you want something that will work, you could get a toddler booster seat with straps. If you want something vintage looking that is designed for the chair, I can't help you beyond the wooden box.

Welcome to B & B!! It would be very nice to see pictures of the chair. There is an antique one in my area that I've been trying to talk the owner out of for awhile. They aren't selling yet...I can only hope. Sorry I don't know the answer about childrens seat attachment.

Hey All,
Thanks for the replies. I'll continue to ask all the guys I can find over the age of 65. That generation went to the barber on a regular basis, seems like everyone today goes to a unisex beauty shop. None of the very few barbers in my area can remember what the factory childs seat looked like or how it worked. Too bad the barber shop I remember as a kid is fading away. As requested, here's a copy of the chair in it's new home.

I remember booster seats for some barber chairs being a padded board that fit securely across the arm rests. Sometimes an old chair is sold with one. Good luck tracking one down. Or, you might be able to create one yourself.

Hi...my husband owns a barbershop and recently purchased a 1960's Paidar barber chair. He's always used child booster seat for kid cuts. You should try searching barber supply websites for ideas on creating a child seat or just buy one. Here are some links:

I would also search eBay on a regular basis...you never know what will pop up! Hope this helps.
