Another Slant Post-Thoughts and Impressions! 37C

I owned a 37C about a year into DE shaving. This was about 4 years ago. I wasn't that impressed with the shave, and sold it on the BST a day or two later. I really didn't give it enough time, and I think I didn't have the right blade in it. I have a lumberjack beard and slightly sensitive skin. After some RAD set it (R89, Tech, 34C) I started to get the bug to try out a slant again. I pulled the trigger and when it arrived in the mail I looked forward to the next mornings shave. Here are my thoughts after only two shaves.

Looks: We all know about Merkur. It is a very nice, well made tool. Not nearly as pretty as my R89, but it looks nice. It definitely ain't no ikon in regards to the looks department either!

Blade Loading: I dunno. I read a bunch of reviews and I kind of had to pull the blade a certain way while I tightened it up, but it was pretty easy. Did I have the blade aligned correctly? I think so. Not sure to be honest, but the shave was...

The Shave: One word--EASY. Many words--It MIGHT have given me a SLIGHTLY closer shave than my other DE's, but it didn't stand out to any extreme. I think with daily use It would provide a consistently slightly better shave, but nothing extremely different. The thing that was very prevalent was how EASILY is sliced through my Man-Beard. Man-oh-Man did it burn through my wire hair with blatant disregard to my whiskers personal feelings. I AM HOOKED!

Can I put B.O.S.S. in my signature now? :001_cool:

I'm in the same camp as you with the heavy beard. I didn't have so much luck with the slant though. I gave it few good tries, but I just found it to be painful to shave with.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I think slants are beautiful looking razors, and I'd love to be able to use one. I just can't.

I'm in the curious boat. I want to try a slant, but also still need to try an open comb. The two razors I have are pretty mild, so I'm wanting to try something slightly more aggressive.

Glad to hear of your slant success. I agree.... my merkur slant gives me a very close shave, but the real joy of using it is the ease with which it cuts. With a sharp blade, it's almost like it's not cutting anything.... until you see that WOW it sure did cut EVERYTHING.

When I first got my 37c, I nearly hated it. Almost returned it. Glad I didn't. I love it. It is my most dependable razor so far. It cuts sooo easily. I just got an RR Jaws OC. Not liking it right now. Hope it will grow on my like my slant. Either way, loving my slant.

I've put my 39C on the shelf for awhile too. I won't sell it, I will be giving it another go later in the rotation. I'm just enjoying my 59' Fat Boy way too much at the moment.

I tried DE shaving for maybe 8 months a few years ago; it didn't seem to be working out for my razor burn problem, so I went back to my Proglide. Recently I just had a hunch that I would be better at DE shaving if I tried it again--and I was (this time with a Superspeed). Then I tried my 37C again, (once) and as was the case a few years ago, the shave was rough and it didn't work out. Then a week or two later I had another strong hunch from nowhere that I could make the slant work if I tried it again--and that's just what happened. Now (at least for the moment) it's my favorite razor.

As to blade loading: nobody knows for sure how it's supposed to be done with this thing. I just know what I think: that the blade edge should run in tandem with the blade guard (rather than running parallel with the cap).
