Another Sad Tale From The Big City

Life isn't always so nice. So here's my sad tale. I recently ran an ad in B/S/T looking for any members that had rare Gillette Adjustables that they didn't want anymore and wanted to sell. I know, it was a long shot. But, I thought I would try anyway. Well, a member with over a thousand posts contacted me and said he had a D-1 Red Dot Fatboy (no case or other stuff) that he could let go if I was interested. We did a negotiation via PM. He told me the condition was "perfect" except that it didn't make the clicking noise at the numbers. Based on that we came to a price of $325. So I sent him the money via PayPal and he sent me the razor. Problem: Razor was not as described! The razor massively overclocked so the numbers had no meaning. And the 1/4 turn twist to lock was not there. As soon as the silo doors close the TTO knob stops moving. So I notified him via email that the razor was in much rougher shape than he described. But because I still felt I had some value in the razor, in the email I told him I would send it to Razor Emporium to repair it at my expense. If Razor Emporium could repair it, we would be cool. If not, we had a problem. Nothing from the B&B member; no response to my email. Well Matt at Razor Emporium was not able to repair it. I contacted the B&B Member again saying the razor was not as described, not repairable and I was going to open up a PayPal dispute. His response was to play stupid and say I must have broken the razor. So, I opened up the dispute in PayPal and PMed the Mods here at B&B.

Moral of the story: Some people will send you crap in a box and tell you it is gold because their word is not worth a few hundred bucks.

Here is my B/S/T ad.

sorry for my igorance but what do you think you will get for a 325dollar red dot. the last one was sold for more than 500dollar on ebay.
otherwise it is not good that the seller plays stupid.

I bought the one for $500. It was Rhodium plated and in perfect condition. So I figured minus $100 for not Rhodium and minus $75 because it didn't "click". Equals $325 and a fair price.

Here is the listing.

So let me get this right. He knew (and said so orginally)the adjustment dial didn't work, you verified it and on top of that it wasn't as described. Wow. I'm sorry to hear that Glenn and it's sad a persons reputation and moral character is only worth $300. Speaks volumes of that guy. Too bad you couldn't list this guy so he's one to avoid on bst. Good luck on your hunt for rare treasures!

A clever gent could figure out who the B&B member is from my B/S/T ad here.

I more shocked that the OP went to Razor Emporium to get it fixed.......

Good luck with getting the issue resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

A friend of mine who is very experienced with Fatboys recommended either Alex here or Razor Emporium to fix it. I didn't want to impose on Alex. So I sent it to Matt at RE who has many years of experience with razor repair and will do it for pay. I couldn't impose on Alex because he would not charge me I'm sure.

are you a collector? cause a replated red dot is far less valuable like an original red dot. in my theory i would pay 325 for a replated one and 500 for a red dot which is not as good as the replated one

Be glad you got it back........

Well I have a red dot I can sell you then. It's not replated and needs some work. $500 sounds good to me. :)

As I understood it, the seller never said the adjustment dial didn't work. Nor did he mention the other issues.

i wouldnt public the b&b member here. that is unfair and kind of defamation

I disagree. The of evidence shows he KNOWS what a mechanically sound razor is. He's owned regular Fatboy, Slim adjustables, Sheraton, Single edge all the way from 2009. If he had 10 post and just came into DE shaving I'd agree. Glen is stating an a transaction and I see no personal name calling, just what happened. We talk about eBay experiences the good or bad besides if I sell you something brother and is broke then !it's time for a refund. The end. Luckily this hasn't happend. This shouldn't even gone to the boards. Instead a kudos thread would have popped up thanking the seller for stepping up to the plate.

I'd almost buy that but seeing he owned a regular Fatboy thats set on five during his weeks rotation and a slim it's hard to believe he doesn't know if one works or not. Do you not check to see if the adjustment dial works nor nor that it moves up and down when you buy something?

Glenn, the seller should have disclosed the true condition of the razor so you would know and have a fair chance to deal if you so desired, or walk away if you so desired.

Auctions sites may provide some protection, but we take more risks and understand the issues of dealing through them, but selling the forum should even be of higher fidelity in my opinion than open auctions, because we expect honesty when dealing amongst ourselves.

I am sorry that this has happened and I hope it comes to a good solution for you,

Thanks for the good wishes. It is not a tragedy but a cautionary tale so people know that things like this do happen periodically. However it works out, I have other razors to keep me happy. :)
