After reading so many bad reviews of the modern Colgate Mug shave soap, I just had to try it myself. My technique is that I let it soak in it's ramekin in hot water for about 5 minutes before starting to load it. (I only did this for my puck of Williams soap on the advice here on B&B.) I used my red B&B Essentials boar brush to shave today. I loaded it for about 30 seconds, and then lathered it in my bowl. I put a little more water than usual for the lathering, just as I had for the Williams. I didn't use a crazy amount of water, but a little more than I would have for Proraso or one of my others. I proceeded to lather it up, and it really lathered up well. I had almost a full bowl of lather to start my shave off with. It went on quite well, and coated my face nicely. I had no problems shaving with my ER Streamline. I did two passes and some touch ups. The result was a very nice BBS shave. I really like the soapy smell of the Colgate, as it reminds me of my Grandfathers bathroom when we would go visit. I am not sure why so many have had problems with this soap. It performs well, and gives a good shave. I couldn't really ask more from a soap. Is it as good as some of my top line soaps, like PdP? No. Does it give a good shave at a very low cost? Very much so. I have to say I liked it and will be using it again, (as I will also be using my new puck of Williams again.) I hope this will help some, or at least inspire someone to pick up a puck of this soap. It's nothing great, but it is far better than the reputation some have given it.
(If I wasn't clear...This was a new puck I bought off of Amazon, not a vintage or older puck.)
