Aftershave Balm recommendations

This time of year I prefer medium-heavy weight aftershave balms. Greasy feeling isn't a disadvantage because I feel these types moisturize my skin longer.

The scents I gravitate towards are Cypress, Sage, Cedar, Sandalwood, Bergamot, Lemon, Ginger and Lavender.

The two ASBs I've tried and really loved have been Pre de Provence and QEDMan Skin Basics Cypress. It's a shame the QEDMan one isn't available anymore. I only got to try a sample from another member.

Please provide me with some other ideas to try out, I would even be willing to pay you for a small sample!

I just posted in the other thread as well - try AoS. Also check out Gentlemen's Best - the Signature is a great fragrance.

I like C.O. Bigelow's #1200 ASB. $15 for a 100ml bottle, each one lasts me about 9 months. It has a mild, neutral scent, and mixes well with whatever else I'm using in terms of EdC or EdT. The aroma is hard to describe, but I would put it closest to Almond.

You can't find it in the B&BW stores anymore. You have to order it from their website. Occasionally, you will see the B1G1 sales, so you get it for half price, although even at full-boat MSRP, its worth it. Earlier this year, I scored a 4-pack from eBay for $32, so the deals are out there.

I definitely agree with the C.O. Bigelow #1200, however, i don't get the almond scent at all. It is a neutral scent with a slight peppermint scent.

You can try either the L'Occitan (spicy lavender scent) or Cade (woodsy) ASBs from L'Occitane. Both are excellent moisturizers and do a nice job soothing irritation.

If you like less expensive, though still classic stuff, I would recommend Brut aftershave balm. Whether or not Brut is your thing or not, most would agree that its a very effective Balm.

I think Cade ASB would be a great selection based on your scent preference and the performance is there as well. My brother also really likes AoS Sandalwood balm, but I have not used it.

No one has mentioned the TOBS Luxury AS balms but I enjoy them very much. I have Mr. Taylor and Shaving Shop and have found them to be excellent for my skin and the scent, while not extremely long lasting, is very pleasant.

Best Regards,

Doug

The bottle lists the following ingredients that would add to to the scent. You are correct, Almond is not among them.

Green Tea Leaf Extract
Shea Butter Oil
Cucumber Fruit Extract
Calendula Flower Extract
Chamomilia Extract
Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract
Lavender Oil
Cedarwood Bark Oil
Bergamot Fruit Oil
Orange Peel Oil
Lemon Peel Oil
Tangerine Leaf Oil
Spearmint Leaf Oil
Balsam Peru Oil
Camphor Bark Oil
Patchouli Oil
Menthol

It's quite a lot more complex than I realized, but even with all these fragrances, the scent is still quite neutral and very mild.

Are Cade and Pre de Provence made by the same company? Their tubes look very similar.

I've had a couple people say try Cade so I may give that a whirl next. I'd like to keep the thread going though as there seems to be interest.

I MUCH prefer balms over splashes - and, of the many I've tried so far, nothing can compare to the spot-on strength of scent or mimimally greasy, soothing abilities of those made by JoAnna at The Shave Den - IMHO anyway...

since you like 'em heavy....i'd consider

1) cade: very soothing and a nice fresh scent

2) AOS lavender: it's thiiiiick but does a very good job and the lavender scent is from real lavender oil instead of a synthetic substitute

3) proraso ASB: it's got a light quickly fading scent and is midweight but it works very well and is very affordable
