Advice needed on cleaning up a blade....

I was the lucky recipient of a PIF straight last summer and have just started feeling comfortable enough with wet shaving to give it a go. Unfortunately, I didn't make an effort to maintain the blade and it has a few light rust spots on it now. I can get the edge touched up locally but how should I clean the rest of the blade?

The wiki has a good section on hand sanding a blade if your rusting is heavy, or try a good polish first before you try sanding.

try a mild metal polish first.

IMO, try a chemical based one, not an abrasive one.

If that doesn't work, then move up to an abrasvie polish and then sandpaper only if the polish doesn't work.

I'm not a fan of jumping in with aggresive methods unless needed.

Thanks for the advice. I actually had decent results with Marvis toothpaste and an old toothbrush. It didn't remove all of the rust but came pretty close. I might have to resort to sanding if I choose to keep it around for nostalgia's sake. It was never pretty, being a PIF offering, but the fact that it was a PIF for a newb is part of the cool factor;)

Try turtle wax polishing compound & scratch remover about $3. Works wonders for me. If that's not enough probably have to use something like 1500 or 2000 grit 3m.

Wouldn't 00 steel wool followed by a mild polish be less aggressive than sandpaper? (I don't know for sure, just guessing)

Absolutely. I often start with jeweler's rouge on a dremel buffing pad and follow up with a polish. If you use power tools of any type, be careful of the heat buildup so that you don't ruin the temper.
