What's new

advice from injector users...

so i had my first shave with my schick dial today and... it was alright on my cheeks, but my neck is raw and feels like i only did one pass. i did the same routine as with my DEs prep of hot towel and pre shave lotion. i did however use a new brush today which wasnt as stiff as im used to for a boar brush and it was a bit difficult to get a useable lather from my williams, but i eventually got it. i had it set on 1 for the first pass(WTG) to get a feel, which did next to nothing, so i set it to 3 for the second pass (XTG) and it pretty much got me caught up pass-wise on my cheeks and chin but my neck was still two passes behind. so i set it on 5 to ensure i got some reduction for the third (ATG) pass. it was fine on the cheeks chin and upper lip area, even my neck, or so i thought, the splash of cold water told me quite boldly just where the razor burn was and how bad it was. it wasnt too bad, i just havent had much irritation lately since ive gotten the feel for my DEs down. at first i tried to use an angle similar to my DE, but quickly realized that wasnt working, so i held the head flat to my cheek and rolled it down a bit and used that angle. is this the wrong angle or am i just not "getting the hang of it" yet? any advice would be helpful as i just got the thing three or so days ago and this was my first shave with it.

I don't often use injectors, but I'll tell you what I know. For me, holding the razor's head flat against the skin resulted in quite a bit of tugging and irritation. Tilting the head so it is slightly off the skin worked a lot better. This pretty much goes along with an instruction sheet I have for a type J injector. What brand blades are you using? The best ones currently available seem to be the Schick ones from Chna, not the German ones. One other thing, many of the injectors have a rather large blade gap and can be quite aggressive.

I'm new to injectors, too. Used my Hydro-magic for the first time last week (which isn't adjustable).

It sounds like you're falling into the typical trap of adjustables, which is trying to adjust on the fly (pass to pass, by feel).

I, too, found the angle thing to be a little puzzling at first, but found that you can get good cutting by just slightly rolling down from the flat position. Try this on your arm, like they advise for DE newbies.

I suggest that you set the razor at 3 for an entire shave and just work on angle and (minimizing the) pressure.

What blade are you using, by the way?

Not sure what to tell you. I've shaved with DE for 9 months and recently started using SE and injector razors. I had no problem with the transition for either of them. The one problem I am having is the blades seeming harsh only after 2 shaves.

i think its just me, this week was the first time ive actually shaved, meaning three complete passes, in about 4 months. i was just shaving my mustache, neck, and cheeks around my chops so i think i might be out of touch a bit. i just got a G2 super adjustable and that was what i used for the first shave this week and i couldnt tell if i was my technique or if the razor really is that aggressive.

Schick's are very light and very aggresive. You really don't need alot of pressure to get a great shave from one even though they are so light. They are surprising for someone who is use to heavier razors.
