What's new

ADP has turned to soup

I have a tub of the ADP shave cream for about 1 year. I initially would take a small amount of the cream out and place it in a bowl to bowl lather. That did not seem to work out too well for me so I started to swirl the brush on top of the cream. I seemed to get better results that way but now the cream is very soupy. It looks and behaves like melted ice cream. Is this normal or is this inductive of a brush that's too wet ? By the way the cream still appears to perform as well as when it was hard.

Were you putting it away still wet? It sounds to me like you just slowly added water over time.

I'm not sure that counts as your brush being too wet, or if you just need to adjust the way you use it to take the extra moisture into consideration. I frequently use hard creams/croaps with a very wet brush, but I leave the cap off until it's dried back to its original consistency. I haven't had any of them change on me, yet.

Thanks for the advice. I was tightly capping the ADP so i will on my next batch drain off any excess water and leave cap off.

If you leave the cap off you may develop a "crust" on the top of the cream and not get any more evaporation. Take something and give it a stir every other once in a while. Then put the lid back on when it gets back to the consistency you are after.

you may want to go back to scooping out some of the cream but use a little more than you were before so that you don't go back and forth between too much water and not enough water in your shave cream.

I like to use a warm damp, not wet, brush to collect a small coating of cream on the tips of my brush. When I'm ready to form lather, I dip the tips of my brush in warm water and face lather and continue to dip the tips of my brush until I get the amount and consistency of lather that I prefer. I then leave the top off until I brush my teeth, which is the last thing I do before leaving the house.

I like a semi dry knot for loading. Most croap will turn that way. I think its how the ultra-latherer video gets those weird floppy strands during loading

I load directly from the jar, same as you, and my jar is also about a year old, but it is still the original consistency. I just used AdP exclusively for the last week and I cover the jar as soon as I'm done shaving, but definitely no signs of it getting soft or runny. I would guess that you're probably right about your brush being too wet.

So is adp meant to be face lathered, bowl lathered, or personal preference? If I have to use a damp brush I think face lathering would be more of a challenge.

how do you mean? If you use a damp brush to coat the brush tips with cream then dip in warm water, it very easy and less time consuming to get great lather. One of the reasons I never use a bowl anymore.

It would seem that dipping a brush with cream might get rid of some of the cream off the tips which would result in less lather. I guess I just have never done it that way in 4 + years of de shaving so I'm not exactly sure how to do it effectively.

Most creams, especially croaps are tacky enough to stay on the brush. Just don't submerge the whole brush in water, just the tip. IMHO, it takes less cream to face lather than bowl lather.

When I owned this soap/cream, this is exactly what I did. I got gobs and gobs of lather from this method.

I just got some RR XXX in the mail this morning. I will test face lathering it for my shave in the morning using that approach.

i just used my AdP croap, by taking a tiny bit on my finger applying to my face and then a bit of brush loading from the tub and it was great!

Thanks for the above suggestion. I left the lid off and it has almost hardened to its original state. Will give it another day or two. As a side benefit, when I go to the bathroom in the morning the scent permeates my sink area. Great way to start the day!

Not seen this cream before although I've heard it mentioned on these boards for some time. But do report back and let us know how you got on!!
