Adopting a beagle puppy on Saturday!

Hello all,

We'll be adopting a five month old beagle puppy on Saturday. My son and daughter are especially excited, but the cats have gone on strike.

We had a dog until maybe four years ago, but I have never dealt with a puppy before, so that should be interesting. We are in the process of puppy-proofing the house and fixing the gaps in the backyard fence.

Hopefully she won't howl all night long. :scared:

Am I a goner?

Beagles are wonderful dogs; ours is very easy going and even tempered around children. He is a hound though, he seems to enjoy barking and more than once I have gotten up in the middle of the night to coax him back in the house. We have a a doggy door that we prefer to leave open so they can come and go at will without us opening a door for them. Fixing the gaps in the fence is a must; they love to "scent" and will follow their noses everywhere! Good luck.

At 5 months they aren't done teething yet, so be pepared for chewing! I manage a pet store, so I can help you with product specific questions, if need be. For house breaking, I am a fan of crate training. The crate should be no bigger than they can stand up and turn around in. I know it sounds cruel, but it isn't like your going to be leaving the dog in there for days. Getting on a regular feeding schedule, down to within the same 30 minutes each feeding will help. Also, get everyone in the house on the same page as far as training goes, consistancy is the key. My wife is known for talking in sentences to our dogs and then gets frustrated when they don't listen...

Last but not least, do not skimp on the dogs food! Buy a quality brand, it will be cheaper per feeding than the commercial foods anyways. Look to see if the food publishes Kcal/cup on the bag, something around 400 Calories/cup and higher will be what you're looking for.

Oh, and don't be surprised when your pup comes running in and smells of manure, seems beagles lik to roll in the most vile, filthy, disgusting stuff they can find!

Love it, treat it with respect and it will be faithful far more than you can imagine!

We had an American Beagle back in the 50's. She was a very nice dog, but she cleared out the squirrels and chipmunks very quickly in our area.

Congratulations! We have had 2 1/2 beagles and loved all 3! The current pup is a Pekingese/Beagle blend, and he is pretty cool! Nothing like a beagle howl!

Only thing I might add that has helped us is to take it out before it leaves a present for you . When we get our new dogs they go out on the hour for the first few weeks. Beat them to the punch seems to work for us. Especially after playing with the kids. Young excited bladders seem to have mind of there own :)

Thanks for all of the tips and suggestions gents; I appreciate it! Very excited for the big day tomorrow. I daresay my daughter is in love!

Here is the Maginot Line running through the middle of our living room. Good times!

So far things are going pretty well, but we are still having potty accidents. With the rain and cold weather, she'd rather squat inside than freeze off her tootsies!
