I was a watch collector before I joined shave forums.
I think it's all part of a big plot to make other people spend money on things they never knew they "needed"! 
I think it is that men who are attracted to these kind of forums are in search for the finer things in life. It is a quest to find the gentleman in us. And I find it refreshing to rise above the sexual revolution that tries to erase the attributes of the sexes, and distinguish oneself as a man.

Not just watch, clothing and pipe forums as well. I believe Pal hit the mark.
I don't think its necessary to re-assert some kind of pre-'60s social contract to prove you're a man, but I do think we are all looking for quality and the finer things in life, most people of which are totally ignorant. Ask anyone in the street or a department store what quality is and they'll point at the most marketed piece of garbage in the place. But to actually care about the substance of things, you have to "go underground" for info.
Gear freaks look for hobbies which allow them to "accumulate" products or equipment. Wet shaving is defiantly one. Watches are another. It is a modern version of "hunter gathering".

Any handy craft that needs lots of tools. Like shaving equipment restoration.
