A Special Beer Glass Just For IPAs

"Made in collaboration with Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada, the glass features wave-like ridges that help bring out the beer’s pungent, fruity aroma.
Iconic drinks come in signature glasses, like the sombrero-shaped margarita glass, the balloon-esque brandy snifter, and the flared martini glass. But until recently, beer of all stripes was typically relegated to thick-walled pint glasses that warm it up too fast and kill off all the fizz. That’s starting to change however, as the rise of artisanal craft beers has given Americans a new appreciation for what was long written off as a working-class indulgence."

Has anyone tried it, can give some feedback? I'm calling bs personally, it just looks like a goblet (or version thereof) with a manly handle. I had a close look at one a couple of weeks ago and just laughed. I love Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada and all but I can't take the glass seriously. I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Yeah I don't now, I think it looks just Ok. But I'm just wondering if it makes a difference in the taste as well.

Although the new glass is marketed for IPAs, it can do double-duty with other brews, too

A signature glass isn’t all about taste, of course. It also helps brands distinguish themselves from rivals

I think the article answered their own questions about whether it is specific to IPAs. I will pass, unless I find it in thrift store or garage sale for cheap. I will stick with my pint.

While I consider myself something of a beer snob (and I absolutely love both of those brands), I'm calling BS on the glass. To be honest, though, to be such a beer snob, I'm a glass slob. I would just as soon drink out of the bottle, so my opinion may be highly suspect.

A tall thin glass will hold more of the carbonation in the beer than a wide mouthed glass. I personally haven't noticed the difference in beer but can definitely tell with champagne. I think the contour would also affect the amount of head.

I think a good ole pint glass works pretty well and have abandoned the goblets. Maybe I like my brew holding a tad more bubbles after all.

All of the breweries in Belgium pretty much have a different glass for all of their beers. Just sayin'. Everyone buys those glasses and says their beers must be quaffed from them because...theyre European and all of their beer is good. This is exactly the same thing.

While I do call BS as well, I think there is a half truth, half marketing BS going on here. I owned a few of the Samuel Adams glasses before 2 moves broke them. I actually REALLY liked this glass. I often find a common pint glass (the one with the buldge at the top, not a straight sided shaker glass) too wide to support a proper head on some beers.

The SN/DFH glass is very similar, except more "extreme". I actually really liked this glass. It also had a laser etched bottom (like a lot of belgium and some champagne glasses) that helped constantly release bubbles.

A lot of more aromatic beers are served in oversized wine glasses, tulip glasses or even brandy snifters.

Tulips really are nice for an aromatic beer. The lip can really make the beer hit different tastebuds first. I have a few Sam Adams glasses and the beer does taste different.

Does the DFH/SN glass work better? I don't know. Could it? It might. Will it sell a bunch? No.

I think this is probably the most correct. Glass shape does contribute to aroma concentration a bit as well as head. And the etching mentioned does provide a nucleation site for bubbles to form, so that further helps release aroma.

But to make a notable difference in taste/quality? Perhaps a very discerning palate would notice, but I'd wager that the majority of consumers wouldn't notice any difference at all.

Pretty funky looking, that's for sure. I find a Duvel tulip suits most of my beer drinking needs just fine. Shape enhances the head and aroma, and is big enough to hold bigger bottles and/or highly carbonated beers (Orval, I'm looking at you! :wink2:)

+1 on all of this. I drink heavier beers for the most part -- and usually choose a Shaker glass. When I drink a lager, however, I need a glass that is a Lager Glass or something like the one above. And yeah, I too am a beer snob who will listen to a ball game in the back yard with a bottle in one hand and a cigar/pipe in the other.
